Fonger
Ah, great ideas-- thanks, all! We thought we were going to get a male, and wound up bringing home two females-- still not sure how I got persuaded into that. :) But it also means I can use multiple good names, so thanks. :happy:Ok if its 2 then start with the obvious Bethesda and Obsidian

geekminxen
Thanks, guys! We've been trying to get pictures of them, but they are quick and squirmy right now-- we've got some nice blurry shots that you can almost tell are an animal of some kind. Soon as we've got some, I'll post. :)
raatorotta
A rat is a very nice pet. I had 2 rats ages ago. Too bad they only live three years, it's so short time. Kind of miss that noise of them grinding their teeth. For taking a picture, give them something good to eat, that stops them running around, because they sit and use their front paws while eating.Part of my username (rotta), means a rat in finnish. Halororor
Ah, great ideas-- thanks, all! We thought we were going to get a male, and wound up bringing home two females-- still not sure how I got persuaded into that. :) But it also means I can use multiple good names, so thanks. I'm actually relieved you got two rats instead of one. Rats make wonderful pets, but it's generally very ill-advised, and somewhat cruel, to keep a single rat. They're very sociable, and while they'll eventually love spending time with you, nothing can replace the companionship of another rat friend. I've been keeping rats for just over 2 years now, and I absolutely love them. Don't know what I'd do without my rats. They're the most underrated pets in the world. :PI'm not exactly an expert on rats, but I've had my fair share of experience with them so far, having been through a few already (once bought a baby rat from a shady petshop, and turned out that she had some disease which then killed not only her but infected my two others as well, killing all three :( ). I also helped out at an animal shelter which catered specifically to rats for a while. So feel free to PM me if you've got any questions, and I'll try my best to answer them. :) Also, be sure to never bring a male rat anywhere near your females. It has disastrous consequences. One of my friends got a male and female at a petshop once and kept them in the same cage. Within three months he had more than 100 rats. Baby rats are sexually mature and ready to mate at 6 weeks, so they multiply exponentially. XD
geekminxen
I'm terribly late responding to this, but I finally got a decent picture of one of the new girls (Stardust, below). She's got a little white dot on her head and kind of named herself, so we went with casino names-- Stardust for past Vegas, Rio for present. Rio is pretty hyper and still hasn't held still long enough for a good photo, not even with food (she's a tunneler and vanishes with the good stuff into her bedding burrow. But Stardust is a ham. @Halororor, thanks for your concern and the information! The single male I thought I was going to get was actually going to be a (potential) cage mate for a buck I already have who is fairly terrified of my other two bucks. His cage is right by my desk, so he gets a lot of attention, and his cage looks right into the girls', which he thinks is pretty cool-- I've never seen him groom himself as hard and thoroughly as he did when they first came into the room with him. And yes, the male-female policy is very look-don't-touch-- they can actually breed at five weeks and have up to 24 pups/kittens a litter-- holy yikes. We've got five right now, and that's plenty. :) And you're right, they are extremely underrated pets! I've had rats for five years now, and they've all been fantastic little guys. So if you ever need to discuss anything "rat," PM me, and I'll be happy to take you up on your offer of information-sharing, too!
