Vagrant0
I suspect it's needed to drone out the workings of the machinery in larger buildings which might be unsettling for some. Also, yes, awkward silence.
Vindekarr
I like those sounds, I preffer them to elevator music anyway. Personaly, I actualy find them comforting, there's something oddly reassuring about them. Large machines have their own circulatory rythms, just like a lifeform. Steel superstructures expand and contract under heating and cooling, compressors and air-pumps quietly drone away, current pumps and substations hum, hydraulics and elevator winches hiss and howl, and then there's a the myriad little noises of smaller things, which accumulate into a music of the spheres-like din I'll always associate with massed humanity. Combine them all and it's like a living organism of vast size, a sleeping titan. infinitely prefferable to an aweful elevator jingle. Maharg67
It should only be played to profoundly deaf people. antonkr, elevator music based on Mass Effect soundtrack, that is very twisted. Check link below for interesting video. http://FunnyOrDie.com/m/8io Edited December 30, 2011 by Maharg67

XanAlderon
One of my favourite musical artists in the world, Xplodingplastix is constantly likened by a friend to elevator music... not that either of us have ever heard it, living in the Australian country as we are. Still I suppose, some songs sort of sound like what I'd imagine elevator music would sound like... if you squint.
