Gunboat Diplomacy?

And now we have yet a THIRD super-carrier strike group moving to the region...... I am REAL curious what The Donald has in mind here... Is it just a show of force, or, is he planning on doing something?

Carrier Groups have the most integrated anti missile systems currently available, each having an effective perimeter of approximately 200 miles. Properly stationed they could interfere or down most any launches by NK. It's just a guess that the Japanese are a tad nervous which must pale in comparison to how the SK's feel..

If NK launches at Seoul, the question becomes, can our interceptors get their, before the missiles hit their target?

Artillery would be FAR more effective though.... I would like to think that Lil Kim wouldn't be so idiot as to initiate hostilities.... but, I've been wrong before.... And if The Donald starts it....... I don't think SK is going to be real happy with him, they are the ones that will suffer most, almost immediately.

I tend to agree that even with their outmoded artillery the NK's have more than enough to make Seoul residents quite justifiably nervous. I have given up trying to strategically second guess President Trump....but I will point out that three carrier groups is the usual number that we have deployed for offensive operations. In addition there is the test of an ICBM interceptor to be launched from an underground silo at Vandenberg versus a mock ICBM which will be fired from a test range on Kwajalein Atoll in the Pacific. So IMO it's a blunt message sent to both the NK's and the Chinese that if diplomacy fails the military option is a viable one.

"I have given up trying to strategically second guess President Trump..."

Congrats on joining the rest of the world. But here in America we're responsible for our elected officials, and this one is marching us to our destruction imo. NK is the wedge issue Trump needs to part ways with China while blaming them for what is exclusively the fault of our own federal government.

How so? China is the country that has been bankrolling NK, providing them with tech, right along with Russia. From where I am sittin', it appears that our government has attempted to discourage NK from developing their weapons programs with incentives, aid, etc. Of course, none of that worked....... not for the last 65 years or so at any rate. Why folks think it will work now, is beyond me. If anything, NK has gotten even MORE belligerent of late.

I was referring to the economic ties between our government and China's regime. We pursued this treason, it was not imposed on us by China or any other foreign country. The legitimizing of enslaving governments such as China's is among a growing list of charges being leveled at Trump e.g.:

They are trying to blame this on trump? Seriously? Nixon went to China...... and things haven't be the same since. (and that was back in the 70's.....) The US government has talked a good game on one hand, and on the other, granted 'most favored nation' status to China. Trump had nothing to do with that either.

No. This isn't a situation that just sprang up recently, certainly not just in the last 5 months. This has been building for DECADES. If folks are so up in arms about what Trump is doing, where were they when our government was allowing the Chinese to basically purchase this country? Take a good look at just how much real estate is now Chinese owned here in the US, and how much of our infrastructure is now owned by Chinese companies. Terribly sorry, trying to put this all off on Trump is dishonest at best.

What I find most amusing though is, we do trillions in business with China, a communist nation, every year, yet, we won't do business with Cuba, another communist nation... Why? Because the evil commies in Cuba have some serious human rights problems..... Just like China...... Talk about hypocritical........ The US government is extremely good at it.

Every administration since Truman has tried to pass this live grenade down to the next one..hoping it wouldn't go off on their watch. Like most prior forays in geopolitical appeasement eventually there is only one or two options left, which brings us to now....up the creek with white water ahead.

In addition to this the Russians keep acting more aggressive. They are the wild card in all of this. I sometimes think all these Russian brides are sleeper agents!

  • 4 weeks later...

In a related vein, the Trump administration's recent warning to the Assad regime that if they are preparing to use chemical weapons again they will pay a 'heavy price', seems to be having some resonance in Damascus. I'll be curious to how this plays out since crossing Trump's red lines comes with consequences unlike the prior administration. Frankly I always thought that 'leading from behind' was a contradiction in terms. What has not changed is that the Syrian Civil War is a quagmire which I would prefer not to be drawn into if possible.

I think you are too late on that hope. We are in there, for good or ill......

I am curious what makes anyone think Assad is preparing to use chemical weapons again.... Activity at an air base? Like that never happens......
