How do I port ESM to SSE?

I've been successfully porting follower + armor mods to SSE these days. But all of those files are ESPs. Now I come across a mod I want to port to SSE but it's in ESM format. Can someone tell me how to convert a ESM file to SSE? Or are ESM files not necessary to convert since in all the guides I haven't read about converting ESM files.

The mod is Berserk Race @ http://bagserk.blogspot.com/2012/09/berserk-races-update-061.html

Espify the mod first with Wrye Bash or xEdit. Don't change the extension just have the program change the internal data that tells the CK whether a plugin is an ESP or ESM. Once converted, use the SSE version of Wrye Bash or xEdit to Esmify the plugin.

Update: It works. Made a follower using Berserk race (master) and turns out perfectly.

Can you please explain the process you used to convert the ESM to SSE please? I am trying to convert a mod with an ESM. I loaded the ESM with TES5Edit, and went to the header area, and removed the ESM flag on the file, and exited TES5Edit to save it. But when I try to load the ESM in SSE CK, it see's it as a master because the file extension is an ESM so I cant save it, and when I try to save as an ESP, I get an error message saying invalid directory. So what the heck am I doing wrong?

Here are the steps I took.

1. I put the ESM in Skyrim\Data\ directory.

2. I opened Tes5Edit and loaded only the ESM.

3. Clicked the + sign next to the ESM file in the left panel

4. Clicked on File Header for the ESM in the left panel

5. Clicked Record Flags in the right panel

6. Unchecked the ESM flag box

7. I closed TES5Edit and saved file.

At this point I moved the file from Skyrim\Data\ directory to the Skyrim Special Edition\Data\ directory.

When I tried to open the ESM in the SSE CK, it see's the ESM as a master already, so once the SSE CK opened the ESM file, and I tried to save it, it wants a location to save it as an ESP. But when I try to save it as an ESP, it brings up a window that says "Select Target Plugin". When I try and save the file as an ESP however it doesnt work.

I have spent 3 days trying to convery the OLD ETAC 14.0 Complete and I am about to loose my mind trying to do this. I could really use your help.

Hi Phayntom,

To convert an esm over to SSE, I have succeeded doing this simple process.

https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/6837/ is where to get Wrye Bash.

1. Use Wrye Bash to convert the esm to esp. (right click on the esm and scroll down to copy to esp.)

Close Wrye Bash and open the SSE Creation kit.

2. Open the esp file that you converted in Wrye Bash in the Creation kit. (click save)

Close the Creation Kit and open Wrye Bash.

3. Find the esp file you converted (and saved in SSE Creation Kit) Now right click it and scroll down to (copy to esm)

Click yes to over write your old esm file.

You now have the esm file updated to version 44 for SSE.

Remove the convert esp file from your Skyrim directory, save it or trash it. It is not needed anymore.

Hope this has helped!

Thanks DragonbornMonse! This step-by-step instruction helped me convert the hdtHighHeel.esm for my new hdt physics build. Worked like a charm!

When using Wrye Bash, should I select to manage Skyrim or Skyrim SE?

Are you porting the mod for SkyRim or SKyrim SE?
