Here is another... Queen. Must have some of the most widely known, sung, chanted songs on the planet. Even if people don't even know who they are.

I was actually going to mention them, but like you say, people know the music- if not the band. Freddy Mercury was one of the best leads ever. Shame he died young. This ones a little mean!

Most influential Beatle is John Lennon.

I never understood all the hate this man got from people. I was a little young when he was killed. Sad how people who are different and misunderstood are immediately despised.

He wasn't misunderstood, he just held views that a fair few folks disagreed with.

John was a very complex person,he was a peace-nik and yet he was prone to violent outbursts. He was a man of intelligence that struggled with his dark side all his life. Some want their heroes to be bigger than life,to be perfect, that wasn't John. Some people see admitting flaws as weakness and some see weakness as contemptible.John was upfront and honest about his many flaws,in the song Mother John reveals his issues of abandonment with both his father and mother. In the song Crippled Inside he reveals his inner turmoil quite honestly,he knows he's flawed and damaged. In his song God he's describing coming to terms with his illusions,he's describing a huge step in becoming a self aware individual. What i see in most of John's post-Beatles work is a man seeking the truth about himself and finding it.His haters should learn to be as introspective.

Many of the religious hate John for his comment that The Beatles were more popular than God or for his song Imagine.

John IMO wasn't so much misunderstood as he was found unacceptable to certain groups that lacked his personal integrity.

Lets not start on poor Yoko, probably the most hated woman on the planet.
