Is Fallout finished?

Back in the day, I loved playing Oblivion and Fallout 3 on the PS3. Getting immersed in their worlds, coming up with a story of my own for my characters and replaying them all the time just to see what new characters I could make.

I like Fallout 4 well enough, but it's just not a Fallout game anymore. I'm one of those fans who discovered the series through FO3 and then went back to the older, still brilliant, Black Isle games. As much as I've played FO4, it pales in comparison to the older games. The tone is off, the role-playing elements are basically nonexistent, and the game feels less free, despite being open world.

I keep hearing rumors of a new Fallout game on the horizon, (which I take with a grain of salt) but if there is one that is coming, do you think Bethesda would return to the old ways of making the player shape the character, or do you think we'll be saddled with another 'Nate' or 'Nora'? What are the chances that Bethesda takes a look at what made New Vegas great (inarguably the best of the modern Fallouts) and learns from it? And if it sticks with Fallout 4's style, how many of you would still play it?

Look up fallout Cascadia and fallout California. These are alternative fan made story mods that take place in the fallout universe. This is what makes Bethesda my absolute favorite. They can make a game that has a horrible story and still contribute to their fans by allowing people to create an entirely new game from their provided resources. For this reason fallout and the elder scrolls will continue to catch the eyes of gamers. I have recently purchased fallout 4 with the understanding that I have no interest in playing the game just so I can begin developing my own mod and expand it with resources from Nexus. Regardless of the story, fallout 4 content can surely make a beautiful open world.

Somehow, I get the feeling that Beth will never make a Fallout 5. Couldn't tell you why though.

Even if they do, it'll probably be a decade or so away from now.

I understand their need to stretch their creative muscles a bit but getting a game title from them that we all love once a decade isn't going to work very well. I'm not getting any younger.

if you think its finished and want to keep fall out alive and rolling, go fund a project to buy or lease the rights and pay modders to create a whole new game that, we can mod out the butt on release. there are almost unlimited amounts of stories that can be told spread out over all the fall out games. Its the 21st century the internet is providing the ability for home film makers to out do hollywood, lets use it to keep alive the games and the type of games we enjoy.

I like FO4 better than FO3. On the one hand, FO3 had the more immersive storyline, but I seriously disliked the way the dialogue was handled, where your character knew stuff that could/should influence the direction/outcome of a quest or even the game itself, but you couldn't speak about it to the faction it concerned.

What I like best about FO4 -and I fear I'm a minority- is the addition of the settlements you can build and expand. In fact, this is where I think the developers missed the ball in that they didn't go far enough with that opportunity.

If there ever will be a next one in the series, I sincerely hope the creation of settlements is not only included, but is expanded upon with way more building possibilities and settlers that can actually do stuff on their own.

And is FO4 finished? I finished it over a dozen times, sure. But, as long as there's folk playing the game and as long as modders will add new content the game will be alive. Besides, the question is kind of irrelevant (to me at least) as the answer is an individual's answer, not a general gaming population one.

Once you (yes, you) as an individual have lost interest in the game, then for you it can be considered dead, sure.

that is one of the best features of the game, a game that I happen to enjoy. Where it falls flat for me is the crappy DLC's. I had hoped that they would put out Story DLC's like new vegas did. DLC's that expanded the Characters actions and impact on the Wastes. While I enjoyed the added content for what it was, the minuscule story's contained in them felt more like it had been tacked on at the last moment. The rust devils alone could have been used to create an awesome story line for hours of game time.

Deep breath... LOL.. anyway.. I hope that at some point a modding group will do for FO4 what some guy and Project brazil did for New vegas.

I would rather see Bethesda keep pushing forward and see what they can get their games to do instead of revisiting old games as a template.

The way I see it, it could go several different ways. If they continue to push for larger sandbox style games then I would suggest to them keeping the player character creation open and let the player use their imagination. Focus on the world and how the player interacts with it. Fallout 4 settlements are a good example of this. I have almost 1300 hours out of one playthrough and I haven't even finished the main story, which honestly, isn't all that interesting. I love building. It brings out the creative side in me.

If they choose to focus on character and story, then they need to start working some overtime because Witcher 3 set the bar so high that everything should and will be compared to it in the future. I just finished the dlc for it and Blood and Wine was larger than most regular games out there. I was impressed. But at the same time though it wasn't a Bethesda style game and I started to realize it really wasn't fair to compare them too closely because they're not the same type of game even though they both are labeled open world rpgs.

Now that I've returned to Fallout 4 again I kind of feel as if the game fell short of either direction it could have taken. Building settlements was good but could have been better planned and executed. The dlc was ok and added some great stuff to the game but it seems that should have been there from the beginning, I'll agree with those who think the dlc could have introduced bigger story lines. The main story really didn't capture my attention for long since as soon as I started to build settlements the game became about rebuilding the Commonwealth instead of finding my son. Maybe they should have just focused on the rebuilding the Commonwealth.

I would prefer the open world sandbox style game direction. Bethesda is good at creating worlds and it's definitely fun to explore them using my own imagination. I have returned to a single game several times for both Skyrim and Fallout 4 while I played through Witcher 3 once and haven't felt the desire to return, as impressive as the game was.
