Mod Author Donation System

Did anyone on nexus notice there was Christmas this year? @Dark0ne You still think news section and public messages on this site are just fine?

I'm not sure what this has to do with the current topic. I don't know if you think there is something more important the Site Owner should be posting about. If you were expecting some Christmas post, let's remember that there are members on this site from all over the world. Members who are of every nationality, gender, ethnicity and religion. To somehow meet all these things in a web post at a personal level is almost impossible. This is after all, a modding gaming site and a post of news ABOUT said site. Thus it is appropriate and important in its context.

But if you wish for a message that reflects this season of generosity. A season in which many see as one of giving, without any ties, just for a way of saying thank you and letting know people you care- I can only think this post reflects this ideal in some small way in again, it's context.

Even if you do not like or agree with the premise, the idea allows people to give back something to the modding community in general. I can't think this is a bad thing.

lol, I love what kinggath has done, But i bet just giving him all the money will rub some the wrong way;)

Yeah, I agree i think that Sim settlements should get it's own category, I love the mod, But I think its getting too big for the player settlement Category. tons of Add-ons. I will say We'll probably get more out of this if one of us makes a separate thread for it, they probably won't appreciate it if we hijack this one. Edited by Airbreathers

So once again, the mod money pot boils over. So much drama.

I fear the money fight may well destroy modding and modded games.

On second look, I am beginning to think mods should be left free. Yeah, good mods take a lot of time, and the expensive tools needed. They always have. Perhaps a better path is to expect no money for the mod. Sure make the mods. But go in knowing full well there is no pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

The current path looks like a prelude to "The Wreck of of Old 97"

That is a strange metaphor, Modders getting Rewarded for creating content that brings people to the Nexus, and in some cases the Games they have Modded reminds you of the events leading up to a train crash from 1903. I'd love to see the mental gymnastics you when through to make that one work. lol.

If you think about it, Modders in some respects shouldn't expect anything more then they will receive some number of Reward points from this system. To clarify, there seems to be now way to know how much was in the pool until after you received your reward points, and even if they did tell everyone, there is no way to know how many people will upload a mod that month, and how many unique downloads those mods will get.

Some times an author could be donated tons of reward points off of there less downloaded mods, I't just to random and unstable a system to make the reward points the reason for modding, So really they'll just be a Bonus or incentive, In fact it may entice others that could not justify Making mods with their limited time to give it a try, sure they still may not walk out of making a mod with the money for a car payment, But they may be able to say hey, My supporters just bought me Lunch. Cool.

Great Johnny Cash song, though :) Edited by Airbreathers

err it double post.. maybe they should focus on optimizing this new site to not be so slow and buggy before taking on their version of paid mods.. ;)

Furthermore, who comprises "this elite group of modders" of whom you speak? Am I supposed to exercise an ability to "read in between the lines" and discover that Nexus is in cahoots with a core group of favored mod authors on whom Dark0ne wishes to shower gifts? This, of course, is nonsense, because Nexus doesn't decide who participates in the Mod Author Donation Program. The individual mod author decides that for her/himself.

Nothing is preventing people from continuing to not do that after the implementation of this system.

The people decide not the nexus, and for your read between the lines idea, the authors can decide how to split the points. think about it like this you have a great mod that works a a base of key feature of many others, we can all think of a few. Now lets say that author tells people that if they want to use that mod they need to give them 50% of the reward points. That might be steep to most, at some point another author will create an alternative and maybe ask for like 10% or 5%, that mod becomes the norm, the community stables out, I mean it becomes a free market of ideas, where they rise and fall based on quality and value not just popularity and "elitism".

the way i put it may sound scary to some, but i put on my big "scary" American capitalist hat ( I don't think its scary) to lay it out in another very American way. You know seeing as we are a wide and diverse nation with many people with differing ideals, like like everywhere else likely in that regard, meaning it's hard to speak for everyone, Basically impossible.

You must be joking about 'Mericans creating "elitist" groups.... lmao...

What do you the "American way of life" means???

If there is something that 'Mericans are good at, is creating ELITIST groups...

I see absolutely nothing wrong with this....and I am speaking as a 100% user. I have not authored mod one and it's not because I am a freeloader, it's because I have I don't have the knack for it. Not everyone does. I am also disabled, so my monthly income is limited, which means I can't donate (although I wished I could!). In other words: even though I, personally, have no skin in this game (so to speak) I endorse this move by Nexus wholeheartedly.

I honestly don't get why this is even "a thing". Modders do what they were going to do anyways, yet now they may (or may not) get something for their time and effort. It's not like they are holding their mod hostage until you download it....they are uploading it ANYWAY, and this system may show them some reward for it. So I say good on you Nexus, for taking the time, energy, and wherewithal to implement such a system to help keep modding a viable hobby. Oh, and I'm American and won't be running away (I seriously don't understand what that has to do with anything anyway, but saw it addressed a couple of times), so not all of us 'Mericans are swayed by stuff like this.

Personally, this looks great and well thought out.

One question came to mind concerning a mod with multiple authors. If they decide to split the DP among themselves, would this be displayable to users somewhere on the mod page outside of what's placed in the description in case some users are curious about such things (if they allow it to be visible via checkbox in the mod settings), or will it strictly be visible to only those mod authors?
