hey, I'm having trouble with fallout 3 (obviously)

every time i start the game and make a new because i have played it yet on my computer

it crashes and it crashes on the dot (meaning at a certain point every time)

i don't think its the graphic's card considering i can run New Vegas fairly well.

i have read about some problems with d3d9.dll and that fixes it but I'm skeptic

about that and this is a brand new notebook.

Spec's

processor: Intel duel core i7 280

graphic's card: Intel® HD 3000 =P (i know i sucks)

Ram: 8 GB

sound card: Realtek HD Audio

Notebook maker: ASUS

if somebody could tell me if that is a good idea that would be great i dont want to screw up my game and of computer

*RESOLVED*

If anybody is having this problem as i was

Being able to run New Vegas is no indication of the abililty to run Fallout 3. They use different game engines. Fallout 3 is an older game that places heavy demands on the graphics card, not graphics chip.

The .dll change just fools the game into thinking you have a stronger graphics card than you actually do. This can lead to overheating of you graphics chip and possibly the cpu. Since you cannot run the game with the equipment you have, you would be better off upgrading now before you destroy your notebook.

No, d3d9.dll fools the game into believeing that you have an external graphics card. I don't know why but FO3 won't run on an integrated graphics card, it just crashes, athough it can work with no problems. I was using that dll on my laptop before I finally bought a real computer, never had any problems with it.

By the way, Fallout 3 is much more demanding when it comes to graphics than New Vegas, up to a point where it will freeze and crash when starting the game if your graphics card is weak, despite being older. I managed to get around it by modifying FalloutPrefs.ini from New Vegas and replacing FO3's with that one. Worked like a charm.

Also, as Fonger said, the bypass package could get the game running and it's probably better than using d3d9.dll.

Please be more precise about that "dot" it crashes, I mean at which point this happens, at the character creation? when trying to enter the game (after the birth scene)?

Are you using mods? if so give us the load order.

Now, there is a possibility of hardware incompatibility as pointed in the previous post but before trying something more drastic try starting the game with the lowest possible graphic quality and if succeed, begin enhanced it at small steps and testing.

The chip is based on the 3xxx ATI card, it says nothing about the actual card power but I believe it is on the entry level meaning it is enough for playing videos but not that good with demanding 3D applications, hence the advice to try giving it the lesser load possible from start.

*EDIT* it crashes precisely on the second spin on the loading screen and no it doesn't begin any cut screen. however the problem was resolved when i downloaded the intel graphic dll (link above) it runs semi smooth but its not freezing and crashing on begin animation or cut screen

well thank you and I'm not using any mods its just the game I've tried tried to load a different save game see if its the beginning animation that make my graphics card (chip) what have you...that is the cause and i haven't been successful. As to the other things that have been brought up to me. i do realize that i would have to replace this chip (card) and motherboard basically all the internals that make this laptop run and that is impossible or to much of a headache

P.S. I'm new to computer gaming i realized the game is far more then this computer can handle AFTER i made my purchase >.> (impulse by much i know)

i just wanted to see if there were any suggestions besides gutting this computer for the i7 processor and ram

but thanks for all the input Much appreciated
