SirGalahad
It was at County Crossing where I first hit this limit. I had built one large barn for housing, a greenhouse for shops, and a wooden platform for generators, then was stopped as I attempted to build a little metal shack for a Power Armor workstation. I hadn't gone overboard with skyscrapers or anything; I thought what I had done was quite conservative. The game disagrees. I anticipate the same will happen at other sites. I cannot imagine rebuilding Sanctuary properly with these miserly restrictions. Why is the settlement build limit as low as it is, and what mod best addresses the problem? Thanks! willyb9
build limits are probably set based around what can be built on lower end systems before performance issues pop up such as lag/fps drops (idk exactly how they chose those limits though). so just because your system may be able to handle building a lot more before you notice problems, doesn't mean that everyone can, it's probably a "safety" limit.there are a number of mods to increase build limits, and ways to increase it without mods but that's more time consuming, possibly also console commands but idk about that. i personally use cheat terminal to double the build limit so i can monitor how much i've overbuilt and i'll know when i can expect some hits to performance. other mods remove the limit entirely or set it to an unreachable amount. i think that function is now included in sim settlements or will be soon. up to you which type of build limit increasing mod you want to go with though. crawe1x
This is a popular one: https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/13779 Sim Settlements, which I currently use, also deals with the issue. Yes, you're right. The vanilla limits are ridiculously low. I typically go between 500-1000% over the vanilla limits for EVERY settlement on the map without any problems. My machine is no beast. Upper mid-tier at best. I guess it shows how puny the consoles truly are.
JimmyRJump
The reason why a limit was added to the game is unknown. But knowing Bethesda, they probably did it just to annoy us. Seems a not-so-hidden agenda with the lot. First promise you the world, and then go "yes, but..." Use either DDProductions' Increased Build Limit or the G2M Workshop mod which has unliimited build credit built into it. I use 'em both, for good measure, and the "Size" bar in the top right of the Workshop interface (the ridiculous indicator of how much space you have left) always stays completely empty. dragonslayer2k12
I use transfer settlements and save my settlement builds then pop them in during a new game later on so the build limit is not increased by doing that. If I go anywhere near taffington after popping in my settlement transfer the game freezes for half a second trying to render all that stuff. Of course npcs end up half way through walls over there and stuck on roofs and other annoying things even far away from me just looking in the general direction of taffington will freeze the game for half a second. Now later on I get rid of covenant and pop in my settlement transfer there and it gets even worse. I even go super OCD deleting all the trees and bushes and crap that I can delete thanks to scrap everything mod and still the game lags at taffington. I hate settlement building it is really boring and drags down my interest in this game. I have all kinds of mods to deal with settlement boredom like mods that make those lazy settlers defend themselves when I'm not there and mods that move the enemy spawn points far away and nowhere near the inside of the settlements. I'm just so tired of giving a dam about settlements at all they really suck the fun out of the game since I know I will have to OCD all the crap just outside the build border at every single one of them every time. I have some settlement mods that flatten out some places like tenpines bluff and outpost zimoja but I had to fix them a lot before they would work correctly. Leaving any trees or other blocking objects near the build border means defenses can't hit anything hiding behind those blocking objects and some settlements can't be fixed or cleared like county crossing. I am thinking about trying sim settlements but I already hate settlement building and the game is lagging enough as it is on my potato plus scrap everything mod has not been updated in a long time now. The only way to do without scrap everything is to have a mod for every single settlement and just clear out the unscrappable things and regenerate the precombines which would probably slow down the game just as much as scrap everything already does. Trying to fix settlements is turning out to be a no win scenario and it is killing the gameplay for me.

The good thing with SIm Settlements is that you don't have to do the building part. Get Rise of the Commonwealth and Industrial revolution (or the 3-1 pack),get Settlers of the Commonwealth from 3dnpc.com, assign mayors to the settlements and the settlements will manage themselves. You can reduce the lag-impact to some extent by changing the settings for SiS so that it will display less eye-candy.
