Problems with Vortex.

I have recently moved from a really good Mod Organise (Nexus Mod Manager) over to the Vortex and I must say it has given me nothing but a headache.

Let me start with a simple download.

I go to download from the Nexus web site via the mod manager link. Like the old NMM program it opens up Vortex and downloads the file, then refuses to show the file in the download list until I manually drag and drop the file over to the box out section below.

Viewing the mods.

I download the mods I can see them in the folder. But they don't show up in the Mod tab for the game, I have to go to downloads and install them from there. This isn't very intuitive at all.

Installed Mods.

So the mods get installed and I can see that Vortex tells me what mods need cleaning which is great and it can also sort out the load order which is another plus, even down to any possible conflicts. Here comes the problem though. I decide to uninstall a mod and click the button to disable and uninstall. All works great. Right until I start the Vortex program again and find that the mod I uninstalled has reinstalled itself and is now present in my game once more.

Deleting mods.

This is not possible at all. I delete the mods via Vortex and it says its done and removes the mod from the list. I then look in the mod folder and find it still sat there even the .esp in my data folder is still there and this is after I disabled the mod and uninstalled it. The only way to get round this problem is to manually delete the mod from the folders. Problem then arises as when you start up Vortex again it sees the mods that have been manually deleted and tries to install them once more.

Importing from the Nexus Mod Manager.

I do this and I see the files transfer over to the Vortex folder. I then wait patiently for it to finish. Once done I can't see any mods in my list nor plugins yet the files have transferred over and I can see them in the data folder and the mod folders.

Nearly every aspect of this program refuses to work as I expect them to operate. Other than loading the game, setting the SKSE as primary the tool add on system works a treat. The load sorting tool has also made my Skyrim LE game a bit more stable than LOOT has in the past. These parts I am impressed with and like a lot. It is just the mod managing side of the program that seems to be very broken.

Due to the Vortex program messing up with randomly installing mods I specifically asked it to uninstall and delete I have had to reinstall Skyrim SE and Skyrim VR all over again from scratch. Thankfully I have not let Vortex manage any mods from Skyrim LE as this has been left to Nexus Mod Manager to manage and download mods and install them.

Edit:

Another thing to note is this picture that I have attached to this post. The folder is where the mods are meant to be deployed to right? There is nothing in there nor in my game data folder yet Vortex says there is and all I did was download them.

What have you set your DOWNLOAD folder to in Vortex, and what have you set your MOD DEPLOYMENT folder to?

Because you're the only person having this unique problem, and I'm suspecting that you either have your folders set wrong, or you are misunderstanding what a mod in the mod folder is, vs What a Plugin, or a Mod in the Mod Deployment Folder is.

Are you using the Remove option in the mods tab, and are you checking the REMOVE ARCHIVE box? Because otherwise Vortex will just remove the mod without deleting it.

These 'bugs' you're describing don't sound like bugs at all, but just not understanding the features and terms properly.

Hi, This are the issues I encountered when I started using vortex:

Interface:

1. It is beautiful and well done. The mod list is just small and cramped even when the tool bars and windows are minimized, and sometimes it resizes back and forth vertically when it tries to word wrap the mod names. on a wrong position the resize flickering does not stop until you scroll down the mod list.

Downloading:

1. Starting a download on the nexus page while vortex is not loaded sometimes causes Vortex to download the mod twice cancelling one of the double downloads makes the completed download later corrupted.

2. Vortex does not overwrite already downloaded mod but makes another copy.

3. Vortex most of the times fails to continue interrupted or paused downloads and needs to redownload again from the start.

Installing:

1. Sometimes mod installation hangs on the preparation phase. cancelling it will not let you install any mods until you restart vortex.

2. The option page of some mods being installed sometimes does not have thumbnails or previews which compared to NMM, those previews are available.

3. Option thumbnails are too small, needs an option to be able to click them and enlarge the image to see the microscopic difference.

4. I noticed that Vortex mainly just adjust load orders and does not overwrite the duplicate files as compared to NMM, In a sense that is good, but in another sense it is a tedious job if need to customize what should be overwritten and what should stay on top.

Sorting:

1. The conflict information is very good but sometimes clicking ok to the load order does not save the data and you may have to select again multiple times to make it save properly.

2. Sorting mods is a bit of a work compared to LOOT. adjusting load order has many steps involved. Maybe it is a good idea to integrate LOOT's method of opening a window and select or type a few letters to find the mod you want to re-order.

3. Also the icon linking for sorting is a bit wonky especially if you have many, many mods. the link will break when the mod you want to link is a few pages away and cannot be used once broken. so restart is in order.

Updating:

1. Vortex only checks mod updates for the ones installed. not those that are unistalled.

2. Vortex needs also to check mod data like NMM to correct some names and version numbers when the mod is manually downloaded due to the Mod Manager fails to download due to connection errors. Because there are times I encounter connection error on the manager download button but manual download works fine.

Uninstalling:

1. Vortex does not always clean up directories created by mods installed. Sometimes there are files left behind after unistalling (just like microsoft windows code). NMM does a bit better job cleaning up the files and directories on the same mod(s).

All in all, I like the speed it loads compared to NMM which takes me 2-5 minutes.

- Never experienced any problem with downloads

- You are not making any sense to me when explaining your Installing issues .... Vortex does not adjust ANYTHING ... it will advise you on what needs to be done ( like conflict between mods ) and it is your responsibility to resolve errors. There are several entries about this particular situation in this very forum.

- There is only one thing you need to do when sorting : Enable Auto-Sort and forget .... I have no idea why you found this action so complicated. Conflict has nothing to do with Sorting, which is done in the MOD section and sorting in the PLUGINS section.

- In relation to updating, never heard anybody saying that a mod manager must check if there is an update available on a mod that has been uninstalled ... you click on an installed mod and Vortex will tell you if there is or not an update, how come you expect Vortex to tell you there is an update on a mod that has been uninstalled ?

- Uninstalling Vortex is easy - purge all your mods and delete everything else from your PC as I explained in my previous post. There are procedures in this forum.

It does look to me that you have not read anything at all or simply you have not understood what you have read. Your post makes no sense because it is confusing in the first place and most of the things you said are not true and does not make any sense, at least not to me. Probably you are posting all of that to get specific answers that have been added already to our Questions/Answers database in this very forum.

ive never had any mod manager tell me that a mod i have uninstalled has an update. that would be counter-intuitive, because it would also have to surely tell me about updates for every other mod i no longer have installed, or have never installed?

a mod manager manages mods. once a mod is removed by you or your mod manager, its no longer being managed, or am i getting the wrong end of the stick.

@acescolar: I've not had the problems you describe, and I've been using Vortex for the past nine months.

There is now available a considerable body of Vortex documentation (videos, Nexus Wiki material, etc.). You may want to spend some time with that material. There is also excellent help available on this forum.

Help_ I'm new to modding , so please bare with me. I downloaded Vortex and started adding mods from Nexus Mod site. I thought everything was great but when loaded about 57 mods- sorted with loot, cleaned with Tes5edit and used FNIS too. Looked at the videos for beginners using Vortex; good to go. But when my game would crash when I started playing or the game would freeze- I could go into a door, or fast track to another location using the map.- I would just freeze or I would be in a new location going down a road , the game would crash I deleted Skyrim from steam, and Vortex and started all over. Downloading Steam, the game Skyrim and Vortex. If I deleted the number of mods and reinstalled Vortex, the same number of mods would appear on Vortex that was just reinstalled. I though I got rid of all my files from Vortex, but I guess not. I done the deleting and reloading of Vortex numerous times but it has not help. Except on the Vortex I purged all the mods and when I could play. Not sure what to do. How do I reinstall a clean version of Vortex? Thanks.

@ GaryBD ..... your game is crashing not because of Vortex ( or any other mod manager ) but because as yourself well said : I am new to modding .... modding is not piece of cake.

Vortex is easier than modding by the way. So, learn how to modding your game first and then, learn the tool ( in this case Vortex ) that will launch your mods so you can play your game.

Vortex or any other mod manager will launch your mods in the way that YOU told this tool how to do it. Again, and for another probably 10th time : it is not the wheel, but the man behind it !!!

OK, so i thought that "transferring" all NMM from FO4 was a good idea.

It is a good idea if you are starting a brand new game. Otherwise, stay with your previous mod manager and game.

BUT there was many many conflicts with "load before/after/conflicts with" that needed to be corrected and i don't know what has to be "before/after/conflicts with" should be.

Read this: https://wiki.nexusmods.com/index.php/Managing_File_Conflicts

Reloaded Vortex and the plugins and saved games are still there but the mods page is empty.

What is the status of the plugins on your plugins page? Are they enabled or disabled? Do you see any of your plugins in the game data folder?

What do I need to do to start all over. I do still have NMM installed and it still works good. I believe that the loading system of Vortex will help with mod organization within the game software.

I'm confused here. Are you proposing to use NMM and Vortex at the same time for mod management? Or have I completely misunderstood you?

Also i really liked how NMM categorized the mods into what they will do in the game. IE Clothing, animations bla bla bla, did I miss something in the setting that will do this.

You did miss something, but it's a bit more complicated than a single setting. You'll find some information here: https://wiki.nexusmods.com/index.php/User_Interface_Overview. Scroll way down until you come to a discussion of "Table Headers" and "Mod Details Pane."

plugins are showing enabled even though the mods are deleted from vortex.

I have not deleted NMM it still works, i loaded and moved all mods to vortex and used vortex but all the load before/after errors where messing with the game

i will look at the link to see how to organize vortex with that link, I see that the game has to be completely deleted from the computer to use Vortex properly (will take time with 114 mods loaded)

Thank you for your time and response
