Starting a new game on SE - any mod packages or suggestions (must haves?)

Hello, I am looking to start playing a new game of Skyrim Special Edition. I've not played Skyrim for about 5 years or so, if I remember correctly, no DLCs or mods were used the last time I played (pretty much vanilla experience). I sided with the Imperials, this time I plan on siding with the Nords (whatever their name lol).

Anyway, I am looking for a compilation or sorts or suggestions on what mods I should use to make the experience fit the following categories:

1) Upgraded Textures

2) Upgraded Visuals/Lighting/Effects

3) Improved Combat/Magic systems

4) Improved UI

5) Increased Combat difficulty

Those are my top 5 desires for the game, but I would love to hear any other mods that make the game immersive, fun and more interesting while keeping with the lore and theme of Skyrim as best as possible.

My system is pretty buff, so in case a mod is taxing consider this > (i7 7700K OC'd to 5Ghz and 16GB DDR4 at 4Ghz with an Nvidia GTX1080).

Anyway, thanks for the help.

Hmm... compilations per se aren't very up to date. Best to sift through yourself I say. I also don't think they're all that popular on Nexus. Seems like I see Russians and Chinese and other foreigners rely on comps a bit more and pass them around on other sites.. like they don't even know where the mods come from. Or don't have the same access. But you don't have to do that.

Maybe I'm speaking too much from a personal perspective. Maybe there's a good compilation around here. I'd never use it though.

To start, I'd just suggest the Unofficial Patch at the very least.

The only really essential mods are the Unofficial patch and SSE engine fixes.

I will try to recommend a couple of mods for each of your sections to get you started.

1) Upgraded Textures

Noble Skyrim, realistic water 2 and majestic mountains

2) Upgraded Visuals/Lighting/Effects

ENB, weather and lighting mod. I use Intrigue ENB with ELFX and Obsidian weathers

3) Improved Combat/Magic systems

I use Omega but it may be too much of an overhaul for you. Perhaps try Wildcat, Mortal Enemies and Apocalypse Magic

4) Improved UI

Sky UI and MoreHUD.

5) Increased Combat difficulty

Again I use Omega but you could add OBIS and Immersive Creatures.

no, if there's one thing everyone needs then my vote goes to Live Another Life. Stop being an escaped convict everytime you wanna start a new skyrim.

OMG yes...

I'm actually only 2 weeks into owning Skyrim and this gets my vote also.

Especially if you're looking to test out of a mod configuration... having to wait 15 minutes through the longest 'starting cinematic ever' is just not worth it... This one is a sanity maker. I didn't realize a game company could have a worse intro than FFXIV until I got Skyrim... no way to escape out of that thing... I was going nuts until I found Live Another Life.

If it has been a long time then you should probably be sure you have all of the DLC expansions, as some mods require them. Also many mods have been added very recently.

The list above covered the areas you requested very well. I am going to add some ideas you may want to try as they have become part of the standard load for me.

'Immersive Amazing Follower Tweaks' - allows multiple followers like:

Recorder

Sofia

Inigo

Vilja

and many others

Recorder and Sofia are both female followers that will add a lot of excitement at times. Inigo is one of the most complete and effective followers. Vilja is female follower that is a bit more restrained and subtle in action.

For personal and follower use add 'Convenient Horses'. That changes the game in many ways that are more enjoyable. Also add 'Carriage and Ferry Travel Overhaul' as a major enhancement to the environment.

For big improvements in locations add:

Open Cities of Skyrim

Solitude Expansion

JK's Riverwood

JK's Whiterun

JK's Whiterun Outskirts

Magical College of Winterhold

Winterhold Restored

Breezehome for Free reward for killing dragon instead of paying

Breezehome Upgrades for Free " "

For improved atmosphere and actions. You might look at the online descriptions on each of these for some interesting ideas:

Andromeda

Audio Overhaul for Skyrim 2

Better Dialog Controls

Better MessageBox Controls

Cutting Room Floor

Dawnguard Delayed

Dragonborn Delayed

Even Better Quest Objectives

Honed Metal

GKX Barrels and Crates

Hunterborn

Immersive Citizens

Daedric Stealth Suit and Unborn Bow (by same author)

Imperious

Legacy of the Dragonborn

Ordinator

Realistic AI Detection

Realistic Water 2

Relationship Dialog Overhaul

There are so many small ones that add something special it is hard to decide. That means you will have to play many games to really get your money's worth. What a shame...

LOL

As far as the flow of gameplay concern, is there anything different after we leave Helgen?

Yep completely forgot about Live Another Life despite it being in every load order I have had for 6 years!

Also forgot Immersive HUD

I've yet to use it, but it sounds like a cool idea. Since I'm sort of redoing my original Skyrim character from 2011.. Korr.. who's about as close to a vanilla dragonborn as it gets.. then I use the standard prisoner origin. Besides, I kind of like it. Escaped convicts are a running gag for TES... going back to the first game.

But when I looked over Alternate Start's options, it sounded great if I play again.

They should get Hideo Kojima to write the next TES and go in depth on the repeating Prisoner story. He'll blow everyone's minds somehow.

@tomomi - wherever you start with Alternate Start you have a quest marker pointing to Helgen telling you I investigate it. You visit and thatâs where the quest picks up. You then go to Riverwood to warn them.

If you want to you can go into the cave and rescue either Hadvar or Ralof. You can also do most of the Helgen dungeon if you want some free loot.
