Vortex Skyrim Special Edition mods not loading

Vortex has produced several errors for me too recently. Only around half of my mods that are listed as enabled are actually in the game mods folder, neither manually deploying or doing so upon a fresh mod installation appear to function correctly for me right now. I'm pretty sure it isn't handling my instructions on mod priorities correctly either as I'm trying to get it to just order mods one after the other without any complex instructions and I'm still getting unresolveable mod cycles. Mod updates produce a weird sequence of errors where I continually am asked about accepting changes to the updated mod, even just running FNIS will do this for me at the moment, but it doesn't appear to implement the updates. Not really sure what started it all, maybe it can't handle larger mod libraries right now?

Vortex can handle large mod libraries with ease. I've been using Vortex for the past eleven months to manage multiple profiles of all the Fallout games as well as Skyrim SE. Vortex has performed admirably. In fact, Vortex is absolutely the best mod manager that I've ever used, and I've been playing modded games for at least twelve years.

Great, looking forward to getting my setup to perform to that standard as I've enjoyed using Vertex thus far, minus my ongoing problem. Good to know that the library isn't the issue here, but something is definitely wrong with my setup currently and I'm not sure where to begin fixing it.

Good to hear that you are sticking with Vortex. If you can sort out your problems, you'll find that the time and effort were worth it.

You currently do have a vexing set of problems. I genuinely wish I could offer instant solutions to them. However, I'm as perplexed as you are, because I've never encountered these issues with Vortex.

The only advice I can offer you are some recommendations I've personally found helpful in using Vortex efficiently and effectively.

  1. Vortex was designed to do the heavy lifting in matters of plugin load order. Let Vortex do that job. All too often in this forum you see folk who have forced a preconceived load order on Vortex and then wound up with a mess. To repeat - let Vortex sort your plugins. ( Over the past eleven months, out of the hundreds of plugins Vortex has sorted for me, we disagreed about five plugins only. It turned out that Vortex was right about three of them, and I was right about two of them.)
  2. Vortex provides an ingenious, rule-based solution to file conflicts, i.e., overlapping files. When Vortex signals a file conflict, use the "load after" option unless there is no other way to deal with the conflict. In choosing "load after," you're saying, "Yes, that's the file I want in my game." And remember, if you have a rule for Mod B to load after Mod A, then you have no need to specify a rule to load Mod A before Mod B. If you do, you'll probably get a Vortex warning. (A file conflict is not an error, as many people seem to think. It is a case of overlapping and competing files, and you have to make a decision about which file(s) you want in your game.)
  3. When installing mods, install only a few at a time. Be sure that auto-sort and auto-deploy are turned on. Let those functions detect any issues. Resolve the problems immediately. Since you're dealing with only a few mods, you won't be overwhelmed by red lightening bolts and all sorts of ominous warnings about going in circles and missing masters. (Frequently in this forum you see distraught folk who downloaded, say, 200 mods and then installed them in one fell swoop. A massive onslaught of warnings puts them in a near catatonic state.)

Good luck! I hope I've said something that will be of use to you.

Thanks for all of the advice, Augusta! I'd been mostly letting Vortex handle everything already, but I'll keep its load order after LOOT in the future.

Regarding my issues, I had recently tried to download and install a wave of mod updates, about ~15 or so and I'm wondering if I didn't screw something up when I did so because it was pretty much right after that I started getting those looping error messages about external changes or something like that. Do you know if Vortex keeps all my mods, tools, etc if I do a fresh install? That's what I'm planning on trying next if it does.

A fresh install sounds like a good plan. Presumably by "fresh install" you mean deleting all of your original mod installations and then reinstalling the mods. There is a way to do this in Vortex which preserves your original archives so that you don't have to download them all over again. The "Remove" function in Vortex gives you the option of deleting only the mods in the Mod Staging Folder without deleting the archives in the Download Folder.

Once you've deleted your mods (but not your archives), you've also deleted their hardlinks and presumably now have a clean game data folder. However, before reinstalling your mods, I recommend that you check the game data folder and delete anything that does not belong there. If you're worried about deleting crucial game files, remember that you can always go to Steam to verify the integrity of the game files and replace anything missing.

Now that you're ready to reinstall your mods, I would recommend that you proceed slowly, installing one mod at a time and resolving issues as they occur. Make sure you've enabled auto-sort and auto-deploy. Install a few mods and then launch your game to see if everything is working. Rinse and repeat until you have all of mods installed and have a working game.

In regard to LOOT, Vortex has fully integrated LOOT into its sorting function. You therefore don't need to run LOOT apart from Vortex. One big advantage of using Vortex-based LOOT sorting is that Vortex will respect whatever custom load order rules you create, whereas LOOT may not.

Well, I'm going to assume that the OP didn't Deploy his mods, and Deploying them after I asked him, fixed his problem.

Problem is, his thread was hijacked, and he never came back to let me know if Deploying fixed his problem.

My apologies on hijacking the thread
