Plugin needs cleaning?

A few of my plugins have the spray bottle icon and proclaim - Requires cleaning (Loot). Now I've read never to do this to esms but these are ordinary mods like the vegus uncut plugins for FONV. Should I be cleaning these? How would I know if I had a problem due to not doing so? Do I have to research each and every plugin separately?

You're best off checking the description pages of the plugins individually because some mod authors say to not clean the plugin because there are intentional edits in it

Apart from the game's master of all masters, the general rule for everything else is to clean them all, whether they be .esm or .esp, unless the mod author expressly says otherwise. (The LOOT message in Vortex will warn you if there are cleaning exceptions.) As for DLC masters, there's an ongoing discussion as to whether you should clean them. Personally, I've never encountered any problems doing so, and I've been cleaning mods since xEdit first appeared for Oblivion.
