Can't get Subnautica with mods to work

Man this Vortex platform is junk

Got the Qmod thing installed, installed some mods - now I can't even get the .exe file to run from the directory.

I have the game via the Epic Games Launcher - I can run the game through that, but it doesn't seem to use any of the mods that way around.

GG, this thing sucks

Update:

ok, here's the "extremely helpful information" you asked for:

version of vortex: 016.15

game I'm trying to mod with vortex: subnautica

how many mods: 4 via vortex, 3 outside of vortex I installed manually - all taken from nexusmods

environment I'm running this in: win10

Epic implemented DRM recently that makes the game unable to be started via the exe in the game directory. That has nothing to do with Vortex.

In fact, that DRM related change made Vortex unable to launch Subnautica in 0.16.15 and the devs implemented a feature to circumvent that in 0.17.0 (0.17.1 is currently on the testing branch).

That being said, I just tested it on my end and Vortex 0.17.1 installed mods for and ran Subnautica just fine.

Make sure QModManager is installed in the right folder (double-check because the installation path might be off if you have the game on Epic).

Make a shortcut to subnautica.exe. In the shortcut, modify the Target line thusly:

"I:\Epic Games\Subnautica\Subnautica.exe" -EpicPortal

Of course, change the path to what is appropriate for you.

And only blame Vortex for the problems Vortex is responsible for. This one is not Vortex,.

I have been using Subnautica with mods - and Vortex - for a long time now. Could not live without the map mod.

I made a shortcut the way you suggested - that worked, and the mods all seem to have kicked in - nice

as for blaming vortex or the epic game launcher - I still couldn't tell which was causing the issues, because... I never got any error messages from either. The game just wouldn't launch from vortex, but it would launch from EGL. That sort of made the vortex launcher look like the 'guilty' party.

So ya, some better user feedback in the program, or if its known that you have to have to launch games with that -epicportal extension, why isn't that already coded into Vortex? If you know the solution already, why hasn't that been implemented into the launcher?

but ok - problem solved, if nothing else

It has - in 0.17.0 - see my post above.

Vortex is in beta and is constantly being updated/fixed. That Epic issue surfaced only recently (due to Epic themselves making changes on their end) and the Vortex team addressed it within a couple of days.
