Mods "Install Order" does not reflect install order

Well, I just noticed what the load order refers to, bizarrely enough the load order is exactly the same as Alphabetical Order (the "mod name" tab).

SOLVED.

I'll start a new thread if anyone insists, but one tiny question: If you set dependencies for some items in the mods list, do you also have to set them in the plugins list if they have plugins?

No.

MODS, are the BSA, BA2, Meshes and Texture files.

When you set the dependencies in the MOD tab, (Load before/Load after) you are only telling Vortex that "This Mod's textures and/or meshes take precedence over that mod's textures and/or meshes"

PLUGINS are the ESPs that point to the BSA, BA2, Textures and Meshes

Au contraire that is not true in all cases (assuming you mean "install order" rather than "load order"). In my game of Fallout 4, for example, when I click on the Mod Name column in Vortex, I arrange the entries alphabetically. If install order were determined by alphabetical order, then I should have corresponding numbers running consecutively from 0 to 212 if ascending, and 212 to 0 if descending. But I don't - the numbers are no longer sequential. Moreover, if I click on the Install Order column and arrange the numbers in either an ascending or descending sequential order, then the Mod Name column should be arranged alphabetically one way or the other. But it's not. For example, the mod "AS Vektor" is number 9 in the install order but comes before "Armorsmith Extended v4.6" which is number 17. Again, the mod "cryohd" is number 209, which places it nearly at the bottom of the Mod Name column when an ascending install order is selected.

The mystery still remains. What determines install order?

Well it is certainly true in my Vortex that install order corresponds exactly to alphabetical order for all 18 installed mods.

EDIT: Actually there is one single exception. SMIM ( written: static mesh etc) is not in alphabetical order when sorted by install order.

There are 4 mods beginning with "S" and Static... is second in the S section but not last as it should be, taking it's 2nd letter into account.

So that's more confusing than ever. Why one exception.

I may have the answer. Tested by adding two more mods.

I guessed the installation order number was determined by whatever your current mod list was ordered by at the time of installation of each mod.

I sorted by installation time then installed cliffs of skyrim and cliffs of skyrim wet rocks. They were assigned install order numbers of 19 and 20 respectively.

EDIT:

Added another two mods and found the previous 2 changed number randomly so I officially give up trying to find out what the install number means.

I am trying to determine which mod is causing a new game start to crash while loading in. I was installing mods in chunks with the last mod in each chunk written down to see when the problem starts. When the crashes started, it was late so I glanced over the install order and saw that it was correct, but when I came back the next day, the install order was nearly alphabetical.

This is a situation where install order being what it sounds like and not arbitrarily changing would be great. It seems like restarting Vortex clears whatever the install order is. I now have to go through the install times manually to find the issue.

@namechanged

When dealing with game assets, concentrate on conflict resolution through the use of rules. Let Vortex tell you where those conflicts are and then address them as they arise. Conflict rules and plugin load order, not install order, determine what your game will do.

I now have to restart the process 139 mods in, minus what I can remember being before others.

Why do you have to restart the process?

I am not dealing with mod conflicts, but some particular mod possibly not working with the recent update to Skyrim Special Edition. I planned to use install order to narrow down what mods were in the group that the problem started in, but now have to use the install time which is harder to find and not sortable like install order is.
