Update of the 9/17 screwed up my Vortex

I recently had my laptop get bricked with a Windows update forcing me to have to reinstall Windows 10 on my computer. Impact on my gaming was minimal because I have everything non-OS related installed on my D: drive. I had issues with Vortex though because it would not recognize or "see" any of my Fallout 4 mods from before. So I spent the next 4 days re-downloading all my mods (plus some new ones and minus some old ones), recovering my save games so that Vortex would "see" them, and just generally testing everything and making sure it worked. And it was running PERFECT!...and then the update happened on the 17th.

I receive the notification on Vortex just before launching my game and I click on the "Restart & Install" button, wait a bit, and launch my game to discover numerous cases of "LOOKUP FAILED!" when going into my workbenches, and numerous cases of my game just freezing and unable to recover without end-tasking the game.

After 2 days of reinstalling mods, purging & redeploying, checking configurations, and searching online, I think I finally discovered (just this morning) what went wrong. Ever since the update I've had TWO Vortex shortcuts on my desktop that have been acting very suspiciously (moving themselves to different locations and refusing to be placed back in their original spots and things of that sort). Today I opened the properties screen for both shortcuts and found that one was pointing at "D:\Black Tree Gaming Ltd\Vortex\Vortex.exe" (which is correct), and the other was pointing at "C:\Program Files\Black Tree Gaming Ltd\Vortex\Vortex.exe" (which is wrong and is the one that was installed by the update). I checked my drives and sure enough, I now had 2 instances of Vortex installed on my computer but apparently Windows seeing both these instances as a single instance. (If I go into Windows explorer and take a look at the shortcuts on my desktop, only one of the Vortex shortcuts is listed and there is only one Vortex showing in my list of installed programs) Vortex runs no matter which shortcut I use with identical results.

I just got another Vortex notification this morning for another update which I haven't run yet because I'm assuming I need to fix my current problem first, otherwise I'll probably be making matters worse. So....how can I fix this without messing up all the time and work I've already invested in getting my mods to work right and having to start over and go through another week of not being able to play my game? Specifically, if I have to reinstall Vortex (which I'm pretty sure I have to do), how can I do it and have Vortex recognize my mods and savegames so I don't have to start from scratch?

Apologies if any of this reads as overly aggressive but I am feeling extremely frustrated at this point. Thank you for any help or suggestions.

When you install Vortex with the custom installer it sets up a registry key so that the updater knows where to install to, otherwise it uses the default directory in Program Files.

That's one of the reasons our files page says "Use only if you know what you're doing." btw.

When you reinstalled windows you obviously didn't have your registry or appdata directory backed up so your assessment "I have everything non-OS related installed on my D: drive" is plain simply wrong, your reinstall deleted significant data.

Just because you move your applications and games to a different drive doesn't mean you don't need backups, that's not how Windows rolls.

so

a) You yourself deleted Vortex's mod database or at least failed to back it up, the fact you had to redownload your mods is your own fault not anyone elses.

b) You also deleted or failed to back up the registry key that tells Vortex where older versions were installed.

c) Because Vortex holds application and data in separate directories (data is in the %APPDATA%/vortex directory) you can reinstall the application, the data won't be lost.

d) Because Vortex holds application and data in separate directories you can have as many instances of the application as you want, they still use the same data which you only have once. None of that causes any problem with your games. Your "LOOKUP FAILED!" error has nothing to do with Vortex.
