CTD whenever game saves [modded game]

What number would you suggest for me? I play on a mid-tier laptop

Try mine? 36000...

Theoretically, based on the setting name, fPostLoadUpdateTimeMS , that works out to a 36 second delay (36,000 milliseconds = 36 seconds) , but really, I've never seen more than a ~3-4 second pause.

At solstheim or windhelm, what that looks like is you get there, you see the dock, sounds begin, then things lock up for a few seconds, and then you're released again. (ie you're able to move again). for other cell transitions, it means a fade to black and back that stays black just a little longer than vanilla.

to be clear, that setting is located in <your name>/Documents/My Games/Skyrim Special Edition/Skyrim.ini under the [papyrus] marker (in case it is a setting that I added in and wasn't there by default)

explanation: from my foggy memory, I believe what fPostLoadUpdateTimeMS is supposed to do is allow things to stabilize while dumping the old cell contents out of memory and adding the new ones, so you don't accidentally get some sort of "race-condition" overlap that spikes your graphics memory (or main memory, or processor clicks... can't remember)

I'll try it. What has just been happening to me is I'm in the Palace of the Kings and after a few tries I was able to get inside from Windhelm without crashing, then I could save inside but not wait without crashing

Edit: Just tried the time thingy going from Palace of the Kings main hall to the barracks right near the main door and I still crashed

Ok.... Try doubling it as an experiment. If it still doesn't work, bump it back to it's default and move on to other potential causes. For me, it made a big difference in the incidence of cell-transition CTDs (and afaik still does)

And make sure you're using the active ini file in User/Documents/My Games, not the one in /Program FIles (x86)/Steam/..../Skyrim Special edition (which is afaik just a template file)

FTR, My system is a tower , 9700K proc., 64G main, 6G Nvidia 1060SC, and primary drive (where game is) is a 500G SSD.

I don't believe it's top end, but at ~1 year old, I suspect it's still beefier than your average mid tier laptop.

Just tried it. I was able to load into the new cell, but after a couple seconds of black screen, the game immediately CTD

Then it must be something else. At least you apparently saw what gameplay UI effect it has "viscerally"... So if you reset it (which probably makes sense for now), remember, because that might come in handy downstream. (or not...your choice of course)

I don't recall, are you using any asset modifiers for Windhelm?

If so, I'd like you to disable the phattest windhlem modifier, reload the game and try again.

If that doesn't work and you still have candidate mods installed that fit this testing (other windhelm modifiers), disable them one by one, testing inbetween each time. Note the order that you uninstalled. At the end of the test, if this doesn't fix this particular CTD condition, add them back in the reverse order.

... or civil war stuff?

I mention civil war because although I haven't tried it (and won't) , those mods may very well do things to all the major strongholds that are or aren't visually apparent but might cause problems on cell transition. Here, I'm not exactly sure if you can suspend such a mod without breaking the civil war "quest" so I have to defer to more knowledgeable people on whether performing similar tests is possible for them.

I also just thought of another. Lighting and environmentals. I'd suggest systematically (like my first example) disabling them and trying to do that specific cell transition (winhlem castle to barrack) (don't use new cell transitions, let's stick with this one as a control variable), so make sure to open the same save each time for testing so that you have the same starting position

I hope you see where I'm going here. Systematically test when anything in the area of where a localized, repeatable CTD is occurring.

At some point, you're going to either find and murder the bug to death or you're going to have to give in and accept the glitches and work around them,. For the longest time, I used to try riding horses. NO more. GD things Always end up flying me into the mountains or way up into the sky. It's just not worth the hassle. On the other hand, I've solved all sorts of things (for my system, like the cell transition CTDs) , so a bit of homework can pay off. It's up to you when enough is enough.

You could also try ENBoost. It's at the FO4 pages but it works on several games, including Skyrim SE. When using an ENB preset you should copy the entries from ENBoost's enblocal.in file and paste them into the enblocal.ini from the ENB preset.

ENBoost is a tool that lets a game use System RAM as Video RAM, in case the GPU hasn't got enough, providing you have sufficient system RAM.

In your load list, there's two "New Legion" entries. They both have the same mod number too. What's that about?

A possible clash can exist between "Cloaks Of The Nords", "Cloaks And Capes" and "Cloaks Of Skyrim".

There's two New Legion entries because one of them is the data itself and the other is the texture file. I'll look into the Cloaks mods as well as the ENBoost and get back to ya
