Gaming Laptop

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone!

I am searching for a Laptop that allows me to play games like Skyrim with many Mods, including ENBs and such stuff.

Also, I was thinking off installing my games on an external drive and sort of...take that drive to a friend, pug in and play. Is such a thing possible? I mean, as long as the PC/Laptop meets the system requirements, I can just connect the external drive and play, even if the PC/Laptop does not by itself have a Steam/Skyrim install. Or Assassins Creed, or Guild Wars or Gothic.

Any recs?

Most laptops can play Skyrim. Sadly, not at a decent resolution and with lower settings.

Installing the game on an external drive is first of all a bad idea for data transfer speeds, especially on a laptop that usually has a lower clocked CPU, unless you're willing to spend 1500 to 2000 dollars. Getting a second-hand computer is also a bad idea as you're usually buying someone else's problems.

Although it's 2020, I still won't recommend a laptop for gaming purposes because of heat generation and short battery life when playing hefty games. But it's your choice (and money, presumably). Should you go ahead with your idea, try to get an MSI, Acer or Asus laptop. Stay away from HP and certainly Alienware.

Ah, I had feared as much. :-(

Thank you very much for the advice and the recommendations.

Does anyone with a laptop really game on it using the battery? I would think that common sense would dictate that you plug it into the wall when playing a game or doing anything that requires some power.

Something like THIS will run Skyrim at good resolution and performance and it runs under $650 USD.

With a GTX1050 that has only 3GB of V-RAM? Sure... For a good experience with a lot of 2K mods you need 6 to 8GB of V-RAM on the GPU to decently cover things and have a bit of room left for unforseen spikes.

So far as I am concerned, there is no such animal as a 'gaming laptop'. The two terms, by their very nature, are mutually exclusive. Laptops already have heat issues, to the point that manufacturers downclock the CPU, so it doesn't get as hot. They do the same for any video 'card' that they come with. (which are also downclocked from their desktop counterparts) I can't count the number of smoked 'gaming' laptops that have come across my service desk..... They were all killed due to heat. And that's just playing the base games. Start adding mods that stress the CPU/GPU even more, and all you are doing is shortening the life of the machine that much quicker. You want a gaming laptop that will last a little while? Look at spending at least 2 grand on it.

Max native res of the laptop is 1080p, so I'm guess you are implying that 2k is the minimal acceptable decent resolution. What are you going on about?

Why are you even making that statement and asking such a question? Have you never used 2K or even 4K texture mods on a 1080p resolution? If not, you better stay out of the discussion.
