Old PM emails being sent for long deleted messages?

So today I've been getting a slow stream of emails from PMs on the forum here. So far all of which are long deleted from the system. I've checked the headers on this latest one (deleted the others) and they're genuine. Even indicating this last one was originally sent in March of 2012. And we thought the US Postal Service was bad? :P

Has anyone else been seeing this or am I just getting the digital equivalent of 50 year old letters coming home at last?

Could it have anything to do with the fact that I've recently switched my email domain to be handled by Google Apps?

I haven't seen this one myself. I am aware of some crazy bug on the forums that means I receive emails for reports after setting my notification options to not use my email address. Every 3 or 4 days it seems to reset the setting and change back to emailing me about every report. It's quite annoying.

Our next big project in the new year will be to update these forums to the latest version. It's a big project because a lot of our site code is tied in to the forums (for commenting and login access).

I guess it might be possible that when you changed your email address on the forums it decided to trigger and send all your PM notifications to your new email address?

I didn't change the address, only the hosting arrangements that are handling mail for it. The emails are dating back to just before I made the last switch in hosting in March. So it could be that your server's mail queue has been holding something for delivery all this time. That would be highly unusual but not impossible.

So far nothing else has dribbled in from that long ago so maybe it's finally caught up.

Today, I received a copy of a PM originally sent to me in October, and I haven't made any changes to my account. It was just the single PM, not PMs of each message in my PM history. (I'm sure I have far fewer PMs than Arthmoor to wade through. ;) )

It's not a problem, per se. It was just odd, so it caught my attention.

Please let me know if I can provide any details about it that might help track the cause.

Thinking about it, we've updated our server backend software recently, one of which is the Exim mail server, so it's possible there were a lot of emails in the backlog that had gotten stuck for whatever reason that then got triggered when Exim was updated.

That's probably it then, another one just dribbled out for me from February. Not a huge deal, just slightly confusing when Thunderbird says I have a new one and it's at the top of the list :P
