ElleGrayston
Windows 10 desktop 64bit, Vortex version 1.3.13, zero mods, nothing happens when I press Windows Key + R (so I don't have a log to post) Problem: After uninstalling FO4 and Vortex and then reinstalling Vortex and FO4 on a different drive (the game is on new drive) I cannot get Vortex to work as intended. Everything would have been fine if I would have left it as I originally set it up with FO4 in Steamlibrary on E drive. However, after manually putting F4SE (Fallout 4 Script Extender) into the Steamlibrary FO4 folder I found out Vortex has the script extenders built in. So I decided to delete FO4 and Vortex and start over........ AND to install FO4 on the drive I wanted it in...E: drive was original but now I put it on F:drive. This change of drive may be causing the problems. Now I can't figure out the directory pointing / deployment stuff and Vortex gives me multiple errors. I can't launch FO4 with Vortex. When I click the FO4 launch icon inside Vortex I get "Executable doesn't exist, please check the configuration for the tool you tried to start" Clicking more says "Executable: E\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Fallout 4\f4se_loader.exe" But as I stated the game is on F: drive now not the original E: drive Sequence of events:+FO4 existed on E drive+Downloaded and installed Vortex Everything seemed fine at this point and had I just started adding mods then all probably would have been well.+Manually "installed" F4SE the "old school method" into FO4 folder+Watched Gopher's Vortex series and found out F4SE was included in Vortex so then I decided to clean house. I went overboard by deleting FO4 and Vortex to start over and threw in a drive change because I wanted FO4 on the F: drive instead of it's original location (E:drive)+Downloaded FO4 from Steam and installed on NEW / DIFFERENT drive F (not E as it was before)+Installed Vortex+Errors and problems with folders, can't launch FO4 with Vortex to get F4SE...The guided fixes seemed to have dried up so I don't know how to proceed other than moving FO4 back to original drive I felt I followed Gopher's method setting up folders but something is not correct as I get this message when I start Vortex ENOENT: no such file or directory, stat 'F:\Vortex Mods\fallout4\__vortex_staging_folder' Do I need to manually create "vortex staging folder" and if so where should it go? . -Launch Vortex -- message "Fallout 4 Script Extender (F4SE) is not installed"-Click More --message "Vortex could not detect Fallout 4"......Vortex suggests I go to silverlock.org This is just adding to my confusion because I checked the extensions and Vortex shows Script Extender Installer 1.1.6 Enabled Thank you. EDIT> I only tried FO4 vanilla (less than 3 hours), I only installed Vortex, I never downloaded or activated any mods. I used the term "deleted" but I uninstalled FO4 using steam and I uninstalled Vortex.
HadToRegister
Vortex doesn't have the Script Extenders "built In", it has an Extension that properly installs the script extender that you download from silverlock.org.The extenstion, as you mentioned says "Script Extender INSTALLER", it doesn't say "Script Extender", it's only an extension to INSTALL the Script Extender Properly. You said you deleted Vortex and FO4, which must mean that you just Uninstalled them, without uninstalling all your mods, or PURGING all of your mods with Vortex first, so now Vortex still has all of your mod info stored, along with the drive your game was originally on, which is why Vortex is still looking for FO4 on the old drive and is having a hard time understanding what happened to the Mod Staging folder that it used to find on drive E:\the steps that you should've taken that would've made this easy...1. PURGE all your Mods using Vortex by hitting the PURGE MODS button.2. Uninstall FO4, reinstall it on the new Harddrive.3. Open Vortex, click on GAMES tab, click the + sign on the FO4 entry and select MANUALLY SET LOCATION, browse to your new game install location and click OK or SAVE4. Go to the MODS tab in Vortex and click DEPLOY...and you're done._________________________________________________________________________What you need to do instead, is this...1. You need to delete your C:\users\YOUR NAME\appdata\roaming\VORTEX folder2. Reinstall vortex3. Have vortex search for, and find your games4. Set up a new Mod Staging folder on Drive F: so vortex knows where to install the mods5. Set up your Download folder in Vortex
ElleGrayston
Thank you HadToRegister. Even though I thought I put everything in my original post there is some information that I see now that I had left out. Such as: I only tried FO4 vanilla (less than 3 hours), I only installed Vortex, I never downloaded or activated any mods. I used the term "deleted" but I uninstalled FO4 using steam and I uninstalled Vortex. I will add an edit to my OP. I never used Vortex to mod any game. This was my first attempt that would have been fine had I not botched the "install"...which to be clear was my own fault. It's clear now that I need to understand the Vortex and Script Extender relationship better. I will try your steps and report back. I had no idea about the AppData>Roaming folder..... I'm also starting to think I should just place F4SE in FO4 manually instead of trying to "make it a mod" like I did for SSE script extender with MO2. The the built in launcher Vortex has will work and that is why I didn't have F4SE messages in my original install.

I'm really curious to know what it is about this people find so confusing (as I had a hand in designing the script extender installer for Vortex). You either follow the prompts Vortex gives you when managing the game, or you drop the zip file from the silverlock site in like any other mod and install it. Guest deleted34304850
the biggest failing is that people simply don't read. i see this in my day job too. i am yet to come up with a viable solution.

The fact that an admin felt the need to belittle me, a complete stranger, on a support forum baffles me. How dare us ignorant fools who ask for help on a support forum....No mercy to the newb who makes a mistake or who failed to comprehend the instructions completely, or spells newb incorrectly! There was already a very helpful reply from HadToRegister that I replied to and said I would try those steps and report back. It's a forum, I get it, people are free to post stuff. Generally in a support section of forums there is little to no small talk, random banter, pointless observations and musings, or keyboard drive-bys. Good day! You seem to have read into my comment incorrectly. It was not a jab at you, I am genuinely interested to know where people get stuck in this process which (I believe) is as simple as I can make it without being allowed to host SKSE/F4SE/etc on Nexus Mods.
