Vindekarr
Kratos, God Of War 1/2/3. Big, ugly, angry and utterly brutal, Kratos is an arrogant, sociopathic jerk, but as him you feel allpowerful and unstoppable. Until the game crashes ofcourse, as happened to me in all 3 to the point I was unable to finish any of them :( Master Chief Petty Officer John ????, Spartan 117. Halo Combat Evolved/2/3/4Reach/Anniversary. A big, often silent Space Marine in power armour, The Chief nonetheless is an oddly compelling character. He's you in a way, your portal into a frankly amazing, compelling, wonderfully deep universe. With his deliberate vagueness of persona, John's more of a blank slate into which you can imprint your own playstyle, aswell as feeling personally immersed in the Halo universe, in a way you can't with a more detailed or verbose character, while he still has enough personality and dialogue to contribute well to the story as a memorable, fully realised character in his own right, especialy in later Halos where he becomes increasingly fleshed-out. A beautiful balance between a blank slate and a full character. John Marsden, Red Dead Redemption. The lead character in a truly memorable game, Marsden's for me, one of the best characters of this current generation of games, as he's at once an extremely developed, likeable, believable character, but also one that visibly reacts to your actions. Play a bad character and you'll begin to notice very different dialogue and interactions to a good character for example. Moral decisions genuinely effect John's role and behavior as a character in his interactions with others, and theirs with him. Rockstar at their best. WarRatsG
John Marston (Red Dead Redemption)I've never done an evil playthrough, and I'll never get to because someone gave away my copy of RDR. But as the good guy, he was excellent. You really felt that he was trying to make up for his past, and trying to give his son a good future. Sam Fisher (Splinter Cell, at his best in Conviction)In the early Splinter Cells he was just a spy, who just followed orders. Even then, the short moments of dialogue made him a funny, relatable character. Then in Conviction, he's not a government spy any more - he's an angry ninja, and you become one through him. You can tell that he just doesn't give a sh** any more - his interrogations are more brutal, his humour becomes dark and dry, his lines become infused with a rage and hatred... he suddenly becomes a character instead of an avatar. Adam Jensen (Deus Ex: Human Revolution)If you don't stop, look, listen and think occasionally in this game, you won't realise just how tragic a character Adam is. He never gives much away, but his reactions to certain dialogue betray a certain loathing of what he has been turned into. A look in his bathroom will show that his mirror has been smashed, but looks like it has been punched, with a little note saying to buy yet another new mirror. Altair ibn la Ahad (Assassin's Creed, at his best in Revelations)In the first Assassin's Creed, he wasn't a particularly special character. We knew very little about him, and was always professionally stoic. That made the transition from narcissism to humility have a lot less of an impact. In Revelations, we were able to delve a little deeper into the character and get a little emotion out of him while generally maintaining his universal neutrality. Ezio Auditore (Assassin's Creed, at his best in 2)Ezio has had many styles of personality. In Assassin's Creed 2, we develop an affinity for a charismatic, care free adolescent. Then we feel sympathy for the young adult who has had his former life taken away from him. As the game progresses, he blends his experience, his charisma and the iconic assassin neutrality into a persona that has humour, depth, history and relatability. He's at his best in 2 because while Brotherhood adds to his character, it is Assassin's Creed 2 that defines him. Revelations didn't add anything really. Everyone in Bioshock (except Protagonist)I do really mean every character, even the generic Splicer. The Protagonist is completely silent, more of a conduit for us into Rapture, so he doesn't count. The Splicer's all seem to show a perfect blend of hatred, rage and despair at any given moment. The perfect example is when a woman is crying into a pram, singing a lullaby. She looks up, sees the player and desperately charges forward, quickly getting put down. Inside the pram is a revolver. The Little Sister's and their juxtaposed dark innocence, Atlas' pleas to save his wife and child and Andrew Ryan's betrayal of his ideals - everything feels real in Rapture.
