  1. okay new problem - Changing email address, I keep getting The entered Email address do not match, erm, thats because its a new email address which the form asks for, you go through the I am human steps only to be thrown that error ??? - Been through it 3 times now checking I am doing everything right but get the same error ... confused.com Until this is resolved I cannot delete my compromised email address otherwise my account here will no longer be valid. Frustrated.
  2. Aah, thats where the spam for appendage 'enlargement' has come from :) - successfully blocked by my email server anyway, guesse its time for a new email address, it was a throw-away one so no biggy.
  3. Please disregard, I was tired when posting the above and thought wrongly that Tesnexus also utilised the same facebook connect button bethsoft uses, as previously mentioned I do not use facebook, and so could not connect through facebook if I wanted to ... the issue was not related to this site but a consequence of the changes made, seemed also to increase performance of this one. Which gave rise to my thought that something on this site in connection with facebook may be causing a bottleneck for users page loads here also. I now believe this was wrong and have deleted the OP. If you wish to delete these posts please do so. Edit: Oh lord, I am now a Fan, Enthusiast was nice but Fan, brings me memories of that film Misery, and the No.1 Fan, please please please delete these two posts so I can go back to 249 posts and stay there indefinately :D
  4. Please disregard previous posting
  5. Aah, noob uploader fubar on my part. Oh well I have been getting good experienced feedback on bethsoft so its not important. And obviously saves you guys more work monitoring problem posters, I was anticipating the subject matter generating a lot of frustrated installation questions which should not be my concern, which is why initially I did not allow them. Anyway no problem, thank you.
  6. If a file uploader has previously disabled endorsements, is there a timeout whereby the option to re-enable them is forever lost? I just cant seem to be able to find the option at the moment.
  7. And in the spirit of "helping to visualize" ...... Wrye Bash Pictorial Guide for Newbies
  8. glad to see I am not the only one thinks that is weird, it does not give you confidence if the settings you set dont seem to be ... set. Crippknottick quoted my post earlier.. which was erm, a different subject to pink banners, but it still remained un-addressed, so not sure if it will be looked into.
  9. :whistling: Its a good thing I got a move on with the first pdf then, for the first few days it was a no file page with just the images uploaded constituting the tutorial, there have been a few versions and expansion on files since.. but I may have been getting close to drawing attention initially - Noted for any other future projects
  10. Aah right, thanks Buddah, so uploaders WITH files may ignore it - It just seems a bit ominous "Crap what have I done wrong!" or "Is this part of the site scripting fubarred, am I about to be banned by a mentalist site bot for doing nothing wrong? - bad bot".. :D
  11. erm - seems like this is a bit of a hot topic currently ... Not a wronged mass here .. but an additional question to my last one a few posts back which remains un-answered (apologies if I am asking in the wrong topic but the title seems appropriate for my questions - noob uploader) New question: Reference those Pink warnings Do they ever go away?, they seem to be rather sticky no matter what options you have chosen. If thats intentional behaviour and pink banners are to be blaring at you loud and clear every time fair enough, but currently I have a Pink banner warning me I will be banned if I do not upload any files ... Which is obviously wrong.
  12. When editing File Details, why does the drop down selection Yes/No for the question..... "Does your file contain assets used from other authors (that you have permission to use) that can't be redistributed without permission?" Always have Yes selected, even though previously you have set No? Makes you feel like the site is hinting at something, but as far as I can see I have used no assets from anyone, just jpgs/pdf's made by my own fair hands :) (see signature linky)
  13. Another nice little utility and probably not so well known is Prio http://www.prnwatch.com/prio.html It replaces task manager, and adds to the functions of task manager, mostly centered around the ability to increase/decrease priority of processes and save those settings. It also allows you to by-pass UAC for programs you trust - Silent elevation of CCleaner for example. But have a scroll down on that page to the second to last screenshot - TCP/IP monitor also integrated. Ctrl Alt Del to see what processes are making connections (or I prefer to go to C:\windows\system32\ find taskmgr.exe, right click on it and send to desktop, then drag the new desktop icon into your quick launch icons, now you dont have to ctrl alt del)
  14. Wow, if it was that bad I would just re-format the hard drive using a Parted Magic ISO burnt to CD ( http://partedmagic.com/ ), re-write the MBR, re-install windows, then re-install my backed up documents from a USB HD I do occasional back-ups to and dont keep connected in case of infections like these. The idea being if you dont boot the infected HD, and instead boot from that CD, no malware gets chance to run or slip somewhere else the whole format wiping out any possibility of it coming back (depends on the users habits of course afterwards). Could be problematic if you have not made your system recovery dvd's though. I dont envy professionals trying to recover whats left of a users machine if there answer to the question "Do you have your system install disks" is a glassy eyed "Huh?" :) Edit: In fact using a Parted magic ISO in a bad case like that, you could recover a lot of the documents off the HD using the linux OS Parted Magic runs in, and save them somewhere temp on another HD before doing the above re-format routine, then thoroughly scanning what you managed to salvage before copying back to the new clean system.
  15. Yes apologies for that, I will only post from home in future where the edit button actually works on this site. :) Well Spywareblaster is another tool I use myself which has very good merits with regards to windows internet options, and placing a very good blacklist in the zones and cookies restricted, but only browsers which use those will be protected, currently..... Internet Explorer Mozilla Firefox Netscape Seamonkey Flock K-Meleon and browsers that use the IE engine, including: AOL web browser Avant Browser Slim Browser Maxthon (formerly MyIE2) Crazy Browser GreenBrowser Not included: Opera Safari and any Chrome forks. Email clients Messengers And plugins Spybot Search and Destroy - Used to be a long time favourite, Malwarebytes has taken over that slot for me. Spybot is however very good at locking down your system with Tea timer resident protection... but I find it too restrictive/user un-friendly for a general recommendation. New users often find some very complicated system entanglements after enabling it, which is why the author does not enable it by default. I agree though as a combination they can be good, and the flaw with the hosts file being how often it is updated.... around once per month, it takes them that long to resolve still active addresses (sites with criminal intentions last only days sometimes before they move on), and legally they have to be correct with what they include. I had the same thoughts at first, but having read the malwarebytes forums well respected participants/programmers opinions, I started to change my mind, Steve Gibson of Security Now! fame has also given it a thumbs up, and it is a client of ForeFront which is the security solution MS use to protect their own corporate networks from attack, utilizing the same definitions/updates. The only big problem I can see affecting users at home with it would be if an in-house definition/signature is written to stop employees of MS for instance using encrypted tunneling software within their network, and that carries over to the general publics updates, then joe bloggs at home wants to use such software to stop his ISP snooping, MSSE will kill it as it would a virus. Microsoft employee control becomes world home users are controlled too. With regards third party agreements - The biggest concern I feel at the moment is a fast developing product by Adobe, who recently bought Omniture. Google these three words 'Flash ActionSource Clickmap'. <shudders>, not forgetting LSO exploits, resurrecting HTTP cookies from shared objects to circumvent users cleaning out (or indeed blocking) cookies, and malicious vbscript tricks to circumvent users of flash and their settings manager preferences (that is IF the user ever find out how to do that - its a bit under the radar so to speak). Then try going anywhere on the internet without it. Also consider how reliable adobe/omniture are at locking down security faults with their software - They only listen if its going to cost them in revenue/bad publicity. Everyone has installed it though, or being forced to by what I consider really bad website design. Advertising methods are the biggest and easiest channel for malware to piggy back. Given the seal of approval by government/economy golden handshakes, the participants of which completely clueless technologically. MSSE pales in significance in this regard. Anyway going a bit off topic/epic - Apologies For anyone else interested in such things ... http://twit.tv/sn ... Episode 258 is an interesting one, download the video and have a watch, the very recent lnk exploit is alarming at the moment. Take care out there.
  16. P.S Anyone following that last link and wondering "Does this do the same as adblock?" Yes - But a lot better. Adblock will only help protect the browser you have plugged it into. The hosts file stops ANY communications software resolving bad dns addresses - Even malware itself, if its dns is in the hosts file when malware tries to phone home - blocked. Windows messenger, live, mail clients, any browser... Firefox/IE/Opera/Chrome variations... dodgy toolbars or browser helper objects (bho's) The hosts file is loaded when windows starts up. Also works the same on any Linux OS.
  17. A recent very good development has come from a surprising source - http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/ Have a read through Malwarebytes forums and you will find a fair few of the technically knowledgeable participants, and malwarebytes team members, are recommending it alongside malwarebytes... They work very well together. Between the free anti-virus solutions, I have watched the comparison reviews for a number of years, occasionally AVG nosing out in front of Avast or vice versa for example... recently Microsoft Security Essentials IMHO has become brilliant at what it does. So much so big players like Norton have tried to play it down publicly (threat to their paid for bloatware?), Microsoft respond with the attitude if other people can make free anti-virus why cant we. Initially I had my doubts, MS once bought a perfectly good solution from Giant (I think it was a variation of Webroot SpySweeper) and created the frankenstein monster known as windows defender which was so buggy especialy in its earlier incarnations. MSSE has been done very well, very system resource friendly, and updates via the same channels as windows updates. As a free internet facing solution its very good, backed up with an occasional scan from the best non-resident antimalware that Malwarebytes is... its a good combination. I have managed to get rid of some pretty nasty pieces of work from other peoples machines just using a combination of those two, sometimes with a safe boot scan, sometimes needing to install the exe from a bootable usb memory stick with a linux OS onboard, and with a different name so that when it came to initial installation any already installed malware did not detect the installation of a threat to itself..... But in all cases just using MSSE and MBAM. I dont use the resident part of Malwarebytes in the registered version - Prefer to have a scan from MBAM as a surprise to any potential infection. :) An additional layer to security - Having a good hosts file helps keep all your machines communications away from bad sites in the first place... http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm RTFRM :)
