Yes, there are some drawbacks but when I was too ill to do anything much and too tired to make it out of bed (chemo does that) it was fine. I played Badur's Gate 1&2 (it's a different experience on the tablet.. strategy is limited). And I played The Room (1 and 2) (Fireproof Games). It's a Myst-type game and the graphics are wonderful. It's really beautiful. Some of the puzzles from The Room took some solving in my befuddled state. I played it again some time afterwards and it was much much easier! I played Fallout 3 and Vegas... but I never got anywhere with 4. Had a few attempts and gave it up as a lost cause. I just don't like it much in that world. But I do understand the fascination! It's just not for me. Anyway, I'll also say that had I realised that you and your belongings were a long distance apart, I'd have understood how and why you got upset! I hope they speed their way as soon as possible. You'll feel much better with your stuff around you! BTW if I suddenly go quiet it's because our internet connection (ADSL) is really appalling at the moment. It drops out for hours on end. We may have to discuss it with the (non) service provider... I can get on sometimes long enough to read but not to post a reply. That may be a blessing for everyone else!

Hmmm... not exactly holiday length... even good holiday length. I understand why it was so important to to get the laptop... I wondered why you didn't just go tablet - that's what I did for chemo... Actually, there were lots of nice games I played (and some I replayed which I'd had on the PC) on the tablet... But it wasn't altogether the same kind of games I normally played and not the same experience. But then my concentration was bordering on zero seconds so it didn't really matter. I hope it gets sorted very soon and we're hear to listen to the 'journey' though I do wish I had a magic wand for you!

I ban AaronOfMpls because there are no rights and wrongs here at all because if there were then I doubt they'd be anyone left. We have to centre on that because it wouldn't be right for the rites to leave some people left out.

I know. System failures of any kind can leave you feeling let down and mistrustful. It's why I told you about my games machine failure. Maybe the issue is too that you don't much like laptops in the first place! I've had a few - I've never bought one - they've always come with the job but (like you) I prefer a whacking great box on my desktop. It's very easy to feel 'I told you so' when once you've bitten the bullet and got something you're not so enamoured with, it then lets you down. Maybe give it a chance once it's fixed. Actually, I had (and still have) a laptop that stopped holding charge and I just plugged it in when I wanted to use it but it was never something I relied on. It was something the job gave me and they really thought they were giving me a 'present' to see me through trips abroad. I have the stupid touchpad thing so I put on a small mouse which meant taking a slot which meant it made other things awkward. It was a long time ago and laptops were in their infancy. I always thought they were like Swiss Army knives. Great for emergencies but not as good as the real thing and with strange functionalities that you'd never use... Your reference to the list of things you don't like reminds me of my reaction to them too... But maybe try to give it a chance.... It may still surprise you in a nice way... I hope it does!

I understand this mistrust but sometimes components fail. You may have many happy years with it after this. My previous (expensive, made-to-measure) games machine developed a fault almost immediately. I lived with the fault but eventually it had to be fixed and actually it was a couple of things that had gone wrong but thereafter it provided really good service and never gave me a moment's grief. It may be you've been unlucky with a flaky component and all now will be well. I really hope so! You put a lot of effort into choosing this and it deserves to be a success!

@AaronOfMplsComplex systems can be wonky sometimes I guess. Anyway, SkyrimSE is fine on Ubuntu Mantic Minotaur (after Steam spent ages updating as I say, haven't played on Steam in a while). I'm apparently using Proton Experimental. Sound is fine.
