locations of all mod files

Just as the title says .. where does Vortex write all of its files. I have files in my user profile (which I absolutely do not want anything related to my games). I have files in the e:\vortex\(game)\mods (staging directory) . I have files in a download directory. I haven't bothered trying to deploy anything .. I assume it writes files into the actual game directory . Why all of these stinking directories .. and why can't I stage my mods on a separate drive from the game drive? I used to be able to do that in NMM.

btw .. I did do a search .. exactly as the title says .. got nothing relevant.

Info on the mods is stored in the AppData folder. That's what it is for.

Downloads default to AppData, but you can put them anywhere. Look in "Settings"

Staging folder is where mods are installed to. It has to be on the same drive as the game due to the use of symlinks to make Windows (and the game) think the files are in the data folder when they are actually in the staging folder (gross oversimplification, but usually enough to make it make sense).

Reason why nothing actually gets written to the data directory is to give you control over what files the game can "see" and what ones it can't. This allows for different profiles with different mod selections and for controlling which files overwrite which other files when mods conflict.

what did you search for, exactly?

you should know (perhaps your search didn't work) that NMM is still out there. Use that. (you still get all the directories though, file systems are good like that).
