Allow filename renaming

Have you ever come across this situation? You download a file called "AAAAA" and then below it is an update called "update", or on another mod page there's a fix for it called "fix". As a curator when you're dealing with 10's or 100's of files this can quickly get very confusing.

How bout vortex let's the curator rename those files called "update" or "fix" to "AAAAA update" or "AAAAA fix", at least allow us to virtually rename them so the underlying file name doesn't have to change.

Thanks rmm200. I will try it.

@Picky,

I mean when I go to browse the mods section to "add to collection" I see hundreds of files. One would need photographic memory to remember the name of the update or fix for the mod "AAAAA" when it's completely different. For example:

234234234

asfsafsf

AAAAA <------ MOD AAAAA

dsfogijdfogj'

sodfijodsgj

erotiert

asdofnsadof

update <-------- update for AAAAA

oasdifjdsof

sdfijsdf

nfsodfdsf

fix <------- fix for AAAAA

dsfgdf

sdfgdfg

sghgsh

So many times I missed including things in collections because of this.

PS, The chances of the above happening increases now that Nexus encourages mod authors to split their files into multiple modpages for DP. Multiple modpages also means more clicks vortex users must perform. 2 extra clicks per download can add up quickly to the annoyance meter.

I guess a similar question is Does Vortex keep track of the original name as well as the display name? Will updates to the original mod be detected if the display name is changed?

Neat facility - I like it. Let me get rid of the display name "My Mod 1" (thanks Arthmoor).

That's cool and it works too. One last question, is the renaming persistent or only local to mine?

If by persistant, do you mean that it is visible to other people not at your computer? If so, then the answer is no.

Ok, this might go too deep, and I apologize. I can't think of a layman's way of describing this.

Ok, say that I make a weapon mod for Fallout 4. And it's for a gun mod. I name the actual gun in the mod something like "Stormwolf's AssltRfl" That is the name of the item, that the game will use, to recognize the item, from the .esp file that I've created for the mod.

Now, the .esp file also contains a line, that allows me to enter a "Displayed Name" which is what the users will see, when they played the game. So if I enter in the name "Browning Hi-Power" in that field... even tho the GAME sees Stormwolf's AssltRfl, the PLAYER sees Browning Hi-Power. (Oh... duh. I just said an assault rifle and then I named it a pistol. ADHD MOMENT!!!)

From what has been posted, it sounds as though Vortex is capable of doing the exact same thing. Except with the name of the FILE, rather than the things that are inside of the file.

So while Vortex sees AAAAA, what it shows the user is "Dude Couldn't Name His Mod Files for Jack **** " Or whatever it was, that you entered in, for it to show you.

And since that log file, is located there in Your computer, and you're not sharing that file, you're the only one that is going to see it that way, on the list. Vortex only communicates with the Nexus servers, not with other users.

  • 2 weeks later...

I came across this situation just a few hours ago. A notification popped up saying there was an update to Vortex available, which I downloaded. After it finished, I got another notification saying something along the lines of "some loose files can't be loaded" and when clicking "fix", the prompt to rename the files happened. After doing so, Skyrim SE will no longer launch from within Vortex due to an issue with Skyrim Script Extender 64, with the following error message popping up:

"

You are using a newer version of Skyrim than this version of SKSE64 supports.

If this version just came out, please be patient while we update our code.

In the meantime, please check http://skse.silverlock.org for updates.

Do not email about this!

Runtime: 1.6.629

SKSE64: 2.1.5

"

I can launch the game from within Steam, but Achievements are now disabled. While this may be a minor issue, I would like to have them and would like to know if there's a way to roll back these updates, or the file name changes. I like launching my game from within Vortex because of the control it allows with my mods.
