Meimeiriver
When I have to add some mods manually, should I use the Vortex hardlinked folders, or original game folders? Vortex itself is installed in the \Program Files\ tree. I had it install the mods in G:\Vortex Mods\ (as that's where my hard-linkable games are). I was thinking manual installs (when Vortex install for a mod isn't there) should now be placed inside G:\Vortex Mods\ as well, instead of clobbering over the original games files. Is that thinking correct? Thanks.
showler
I don't know what game you are modding, but I have very, very rarely ever had a mod that I had to install manually. Usually, even a mod that's just the files dumped into a zip will install through Vortex. The ones that I have found that needed a manual install were ones where the author included a bunch of options in a single file, but no scripted installer. In those cases, I don't install it to either the game directory or the Vortex staging folder. What I do is install it in an empty directory, recreating the file structure as needed (copy/paste folder names from the game directory) and then zip that directory up into a file and install it as a mod in Vortex. That way I can enable/disable/uninstall/reinstall all I want without messing things up, and also Vortex then will recognize file conflicts with other mods. I am trying to mod Cyberpunk 2077, specifically Lucy's Apartment After Edgerunners, at: https://www.nexusmods.com/cyberpunk2077/mods/5800?tab=files I am getting the 'fallback' message (see below). It says proceeding will cause it to dump EVERYTHING into the staging folder. Does thst mean it will dump everything into the staging folder root? (not good) Or also subdirectories (as needed by the game)? Like you, I really rather not manually mod anymore, as that tends to get too messy (after ten mods or so, as you're beginning to lose overview). I will try whether I can recreate a Vortex scructure inside a zip (never done that before). Is rhere a guide for that, perchance? N.B. I had pasted an image in here, showing the Vortex error, but the forum says "You are not allowed to use that image extension on this community." So, I can't show you. showler
Oooh. Never modded Cyberpunk. I believe it has an extension to enable it in Vortex. That usually means that support is offered through the extension page comments. Might get better information there unless someone more knowledgeable than I comes along. https://www.nexusmods.com/site/mods/196?tab=posts
Pickysaurus
Vortex backs up any files in the mods directly that it isn't managing when creating links for one it provides and restores them when you disable/remove that mod. Generally for the best experience all mods should be installed which Vortex. Some Cyberpunk authors incorrectly assume their mod won't work with Vortex. Fancy meeting you here. :) I'd love to use Vortex for this Lucy apartment too, but I get this Vortex message (see below). Will these files go in the correct directories, after all? I don't even know what a vortex file looks like; if I knew, I can maybe try and repair it, so it will deploy properly under Vortex.
Pickysaurus
Ah, so that's something exclusive to that extension. Basically, when a mod author doesn't package their mod properly it shows that. For all other games it would just extract the files as described. If the mod authors instruction is just "Extract to the game folder" that will work properly.
