"You can't go that way. Turn back"

Recommended Posts

I first relocated MyOldOblivion.ini and then the original Oblivion.ini. I still face the same problem. The game also sets my graphics every time I launch the game. Like I am in a loop.

The only other possibility that comes to mind (beyond Steam Cloud screwing you up) is if you use Oblivion Reloaded Combined it has a 'feature' that will do the same as what Steam is doing (keep replacing your edited Oblivion.ini settings with it's own).

I have never heard "Oblivion Reloaded Combined" again.

OK forget about that then (I follow a particular Collection's comments and many times people complain about screen resolution problems that always come down to ORC overriding their settings).

Don't know if that makes any sense, but the game says that it has auto-saved, right when I spawn in the prison. Off course no real save has been made. I remember yesterday deleting my two saves from the previous pc, but they reappeared.

If your previous computer also used the Steam version of the game with the same Steam settings for 'auto-everything' then it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest that Steam is having fun messing with your mind. You can probably guess that I am not a big fan of 'auto- anything' ... if I forget to save something I only need to look in a mirror to find the culprit. Conversely I also don't need to scratch my head to figure out why something is happening as nothing happens if I don't do it.

I'm not trying to say 'auto-everything' is 'wrong' it's just not for me. 'Easier' always comes with a price tag, and I'm just a grumpy old guy who doesn't spend a penny that I don't need to.

For me it seems that Steam is replacing your changed files with the ones from cloud, that's why your changes doesn't have any effect. And it seems as if you haven't write access to your cloud files or cloud disk too for some reason, so that's why game saves and options can't be saved too. I would try to disable synchronizing files for this game (in Steam launcher must be this option somewhere) and check if changing game options and saving games is working after this.

Your comment about the graphics settings getting reset has me thinking something is interfering with your Oblivion.ini settings.

Normally the game saves it's current settings to Oblivion.ini each time you exit the game. If it doesn't and you are changing your graphics setting using the in-game menu then that change wouldn't be there next time you start the game if Oblivion.ini isn't getting properly saved on exit.

There is a console command to force a save of Oblivion.ini before you exit ... it's just saveini. I'm not sure if the saveini console command will report success or failure, but giving it a try may help narrow down if the problem stems from something like that.

@Striker879: As this thread revealed that Dimitrisgb is facing a larger problem, we should move to his "Can't save the game..." thread now. He even can't save game, so I suspect that a whole directory is set to read-only for his Oblivion. I hoped that is some error coming from syncing to Steam cloud, but as it seems not a case, finding a culprit without much info would be difficult (encrypting disk, security policy, some new Win 11 API...).
