Next-Gen Games Spark Price Hike

Hopefully it doesn't. Maybe they'll wake up and notice that lowering the price may attract more buyer's. Then again EA is the greedy. Next thing EA will try to take over the world.

It will attract more buyers, but put them out of business. Prices increase, that's just a fact of life. Remember that thing called inflation? Game prices have been fairly static for a long time, so they're overdue for an increase.

The only realistic way to cut prices is to move to online-only sales, using a system like Halflife2.

From IGN:

"Of course, software production costs are not the only factor in a game's price. Traditionally console manufacturers have sold hardware below cost, making up for the loss with software licensing fees. Industry speculation has next-generation consoles potentially priced as high as $500, doubtless reflecting the investment companies like Sony and Microsoft are making in designing a cutting-edge box. There's reason to think even a price this high is below actual cost -- thus, higher licensing fees and higher software prices."

Well if it was raised to £50 in the uk that would annoy me abit. I think it's about £35 for a new game here at the moment and I still normally wait while until I get new titles or buy them on ebay or other sites that have the game for cheaper than the stores.

Of course, they also can't risk raising the prices too high, for if they did, it would only encourage people to turn to software piracy. If your average person can't afford the new titles then they're just going to download them for free from the net. Of course, advanced CD protection measures might help to avoid that, but hackers usually find a way around it.

but ebay, along with everything else is getting pricier as well, if it still exists lets say 30 years from now prices will be up. but you also have to remember that people are getting more money as well.

Maybe I have been listening to my grandmothers 1 cent a pack of gum stories.

Exactly, I don't know what is so hard to understand about this. Inflation happens, prices rise over time. This is an inevitable fact of our economy, there is absolutely nothing you can do to change it. Game prices have been static for so long that they have fallen behind the usual inflation increases, and are just finally catching up to where they should be.

It's pointless to whine about it and expect prices to fall again, because they aren't. The only way to drop game prices would be to cut development effort. Otherwise the company goes out of business.

Or not. Not when multiplayer is such an important part of most games, and pirated versions don't work online.

One can only hope that the price's will fall. But if ya can't find the price you want go to Ebay.

They aren't going to, so you might as well get used to it. The only way you're going to get cheaper games is if you're willing to wait a few months for them to get the inevitable old-age price drop.

yeah, and the "old age price drop" will always be around so I guess this is the only way through it.

seriously guys, never have things ever got to be cheaper as the world goes along. Resources get slimmer (prices increase) no matter what there is nothing we can do about it.

it may come to piracy but remember that peoples income increases as well somewhat moderatly.

Yes, but the number of people buying games has increased dramatically as well compared to 10 years ago. I'd predict 3 times, if not 4 times as many people. The two should even out.
