Shrapnel
The mod manager updated its game extensions after I was playing FO4 the last time. Now I wanted to resume my playthrough (maybe a two day gap between those sessions) and Vortex doesn't read my save folder anymore. When I start the game, I can only start a new game, not load any saves. When I use the "Save Games" tab in Vortex, it doesn't show any savegames. When I click on "Open Save Games" it opens the regular FO4 save game folder and all of my saves are still there. There doesn't seem to be any FO4 extensions running in Vortex, when I check the extensions tab it only shows BGIII (don't even have that game), Ready Or Not and Unreal Engine Mod Installer. Nothing FO4 related. Please help. I don't want to lose all of my progress yet again. Edit: Oh, and I'm not using profiles.
Solution showler Posted December 15, 2023 Solution Share Posted December 15, 2023 Check in your steam install directory under "userdata" and sort by most recent changes, then check the numbered folders for files ending in ".fos". I had the same thing happen last night and Steam had moved all my save files from the Documents folder to that folder in the Steam install directory. Moving them back fixed everything. Shrapnel
Sorry, but I can't follow you at all. What directory do you mean? There's no userdate folder in any steam directory or on steam I can find and as I said, my save games are where they're supposed to be under C:/User/[Username]/Documents/MyGames/Fallout4/Saves All present and accounted for. Neither Vortex nor FO4 seem to realize it though. But I really don't know what you mean in the first place, sry ^^
Shrapnel
Oh. f*#@ it. Now I understood, did what you suggested and found my save games. Thanks a bunch mate and sorry for me being dense.
showler
The ones that stayed in your save games folder are probably the F4SE co-saves. Same thing with me. LarannKiar saved me last night and I am happy to pass this help on to another.
Zanderat
Better question is why did that happen at all? Did FO4 update?
Guest deleted34304850
seems to be a setting in steam itself. i checked my steam yesterday and found the option set to disabled, it could be something from a steam update - perhaps?
showler
I don't think it was FO4 and it wasn't Vortex because I hadn't even opened Vortex between game sessions. But Steam starts automatically with my computer and I usually don't see what updates it is doing. I'm copying my save folder to a different drive after playing just in case. Zanderat
Hmm. Just to be safe I mad sure that the STEAM Cloud thing was turned off for any game I am modding.
showler
That's the most annoying thing. It is off. It's always off. It doesn't function properly on a modded game anyway because it doesn't back up the F4SE co-saves. It was still off when I checked after the incident. It is a bit maddening.
