What happened?

I downloaded and installed Vortex a while back, not sure how long ago, and then about a week ago, Fallout 4 and Skyrim just stopped working. Won't load. Won't run. I got frustrated with it and deleted vortex. Games still won't run through steam. So, now I've uninstalled FO4 and am reinstalling it now. I have a metered connection on top of all this, so it's costing me $10 to download a game I previously downloaded, LoL. Idk, maybe I'm not smart enough to play games on a computer and should just go back to the console.

I was really enjoying the heavily modded versions of the games running in 1440 resolution. I don't want to go back to the console, but I'm afraid I probably won't have much choice. I'm expecting the solutions to be outside of my computer skill level.

Anywho, if anybody thinks they can help me fix this, I'd really appreciate it.

got to ask, if you're on a metered internet connection, why would you proceed to uninstall/redownload anything?

further, you uninstalled vortex (why?) and it made no difference, your games didn't work - this one action shows that vortex is not a culprit here.

also - while this doesn't sound like anything vortex can or will do - its just a mod manager - you've neglected to say what YOU have done - in terms of:

  1. have you added any mods to your games?
  2. have you removed any mods from your games?
  3. have you made changes to any vortex settings since you installed it and then came back to it?
  4. have you moved any of the game files and folders to other disks?
  5. skyrim was recently updated - as a result a lot mods stopped working - have you updated all the mods that are flagged as requiring an update in vortex?
  6. when you uninstalled vortex did you do anything else, such as run an uninstaller program or make any changes to various vortex folders in APPDATA?

also, can you put where your games are installed, where your vortex is installed, where your vortex downloads are set to be written to, and where your staging folders are located? all of that can help with diagnosing your issues.

1. Yeah, there were a bunch. I don't even know what all there was.

2. No

3. No

4. No

5. Thought I did. Not sure

6. I don't even know what APP DATA is.

I have no idea what any of that means. I have no idea where these things are written in the HD.

no worries im glad you could get it going again. please just don't disable/remove any mods from bethesda games - that will give you a bad day. good luck.

Great! Might be better to ask before you do anything next time though you seem to have emerged unscathed! 😁

If you want to have a playthrough with different mods then you can always set up profiles - it can sometimes help to isolate an issue with a particular mod. But maybe that's for some other time... For now maybe it's best just to play! 😁 It's sounds like your day has been quite exciting enough!
