Mod Browsing Overhaul Discussion

There's so much wasted space.
I want to see more than three items at once when scrolling, the search bar expanding to cover most of the screen simultaneously distracts me by suddenly blowing up to be way bigger than it should be and also doesn't show enough results at once (similar to the main page, but worse because it's a search function that doesn't show me search results), and the filter bar needs to be expandable to fit the landscape orientation of most users' screens.
The filters are just more readable and easier to navigate in a landscape orientation, and having to scroll up and down repeatedly to use the filters is just kinda irritating.
The popular collections on the landing page? Sure, fine. Put them lower down, though. I come to Nexus mods to either find something specific or browse through what's new since I last checked the site, and the "view all" button to go to browsing is way too small and too out-of-the-way. The collections should be lower down than the "more mods" section, which should really be the "latest mods" section, since those seem like the most used elements for the vast majority of people I've ever spoken to about the site. Y'know, like it used to be.

Furthermore... I just really hate how it looks.
Lifeless. Soulless. Corporate.
Forgive the crass imagery, but I really can't think of a better way to describe my distaste for the new visual style beyond "sticky". The tech-bro wet dream idea of "'sleek' = good". It's ugly as sin.
The old design may not have been the prettiest, but it was a million times more functional, and a lot more cozy. Now it smacks of overpriced nylon suits and labour law violations.

Since making this post I've gone looking at what responses the staff have given so far. To use the word "disappointed" would just be lying. The response has been condescending and downright hostile, amounting to little more than "stop whining", "you just hate change", and "f*#@ you".
Maybe we... hate these changes. For multiple reasons we've been very clear about. Maybe people hate change because the changes were bad and we've been thorough in explaining why. Maybe telling us "give us feedback" and then immediately following it with "shut up" makes the whole team seem like they're throwing a childish tantrum because someone didn't like their show-and-(don't-)tell presentation.

No, the word I'm looking for isn't "disappointed". I am disgusted by the Nexus team's response to their users' criticisms.

Hey everyone,

I usually don’t comment on internal changes, but this time, I feel like I have to speak up. Besides being a modder, I’m also a professional web developer, and honestly, I’m quite disappointed with this design overhaul. The choice of an ultra-minimalist design (following the "trend"), primarily focused on mobile at the expense of desktop usability, seems like a huge mistake. Modding is, above all, a world of "tinkerers," and a tinkerer will always prefer a functional, clear, and distinct interface over one that is overly spacious, where everything looks the same and finding what you need becomes a hassle.

I see that many people already share the same opinion, so I won’t go over the full list of issues again. But for now, it would really make sense to revert to the previous design, which was highly functional and met the community’s needs perfectly. Why try to "improve" something that was already working well? The site now feels cold and impersonal, which is a real shame for a platform that thrives thanks to us, the community.

Even if the staff has indicated they won’t consider our feedback, it’s still worth trying. It’s never too late to rethink a decision.

Thanks for reading.

Plenty of people are talking about how subjectively the new design isn't as good looking as the old design, which I somewhat agree with, but my main concern is the loss of several quality of life features: Trending mods no longer show a mod's category and displays one less mod, there is no longer an option to view the images of mod without clicking on the mod, there is no longer an option to set a custom time range when browsing mods, and a few others that people have already mentioned. These are features I have always made use of so I'm disappointed that they've just been stripped out. It definitely feels like this UI change got pushed out too soon.

Which is baffling to think about. I'm assuming Nexus A)Hired and paid a team to make a new UI design for the site. or B)Had their own staff develop the new UI design

In either case, I can understand the strong commitment to putting the UI to use, especially in Case A. Perhaps a sunk cost fallacy, etc, or etc.

Making Nexus more mobile friendly is a GOOD thing, I despised browsing Nexus on my mobile device, would just wait until I was able to reach my desktop 9 times out of 10 if I wanted to browse something on Nexus.

My question is, why does the new UI have to be site-wide instead of just mobile specific? It can't be a limitation, it has to be possible. Mobile gets the new UI and desktop has the old UI. Cosmetic and minor edits to both to bring color and theme consistency, but then the site is usable on both platforms. Win-Win. It's bonkers to me that the desktop experience should be restricted to a lower level of quality so that the mobile experience is the same and/or at least similar.

I feel a lot of peoples, including my own, feedback will just be labeled "I do not like change" and be promptly discarded since this seems to be the go-to answer for a lot of feedback toward the new design. I'm not going to contribute my own thoughts any further to spare time.

I wanted to see if they indeed got rid of it, but to my surprise, it was even worse: they got rid of the entire feedback page. Now there's a "suggestion board" and everything in it is gone.

Oh dear god that's REALLY bad. Like REALLY bad. I was right with saying they were going to start damage control. It'll be seconds before they lock this topic, so I'll say this before they do. We might need to get #BoycottNexusMods trending somewhere. This is awful to see and I had no idea what Nexus was like behind the scenes, it's deeply saddening to see.

We definitely at this point need Dark0ne himself to come out of the bush and say something that we WANT to hear. I did not expect this place to start burning down so quickly.
