NateTheWizard
1) As a person who plays primarily on console (not by choice), I don't have the option to cheat. But I know that, if I were able to play on PC, I would have no desire to cheat. That's just not the way I like to play the game. 2) As for advice, remind yourself why you're playing the game. Are you playing Skyrim to 'Be the best at it' or to show off all of the things you've done? Or, do you play to kind of escape into this immersive world and do things you don't get the chance to do in the real world? I think if you're part of the second school of thought, you won't find yourself cheating because it removes that immersion. If, however, you find yourself in the first school of thought and view cheating as an easy way to the top of this ladder you're climbing, then you should stop and consider how much more rewarding it is to actually 'Earn' (with hard, virtual, work) your in-game achievements as opposed to having them handed to you. Long story short: It's more about the journey than the destination.

Pileggi
Skyrim is a game that is very difficult to balance well so I find myself having a huge urge to cheat regularly. I found this especially difficult on my current playthrough where I vowed to never fast travel. Stopping fast travel was easy, I simply adapted and used the carriages. However, since I have deadly dragons installed my dragon encounters were extremely hard to the point where a single breath would vaporise me. Because I had stopped fast travelling I often got sent back more than 35 minutes after being killed, which I felt was completely unfair as I never intended to challenge a dragon of such high caliber. I realise it's called deadly dragons for a reason and it is tweakable but I found the same problem with vanilla dragons, particularly the ones introduced in dawnguard. Luckily I have modded my game to solve the problem is now gone but not everyone wants to spend time figuring out a problem that causes them to cheat. I guess what I'm trying to say is the game really has no limits but the downside is you will have to tweak and mod those limits to your own tastes or you will find yourself cheating to compensate being under/overpowered. velve666
If I explore a random cave fight off the first few waves of baddies and get to the final "boss" stage and I cant beat em, even after 5,10,15, reloads I will run back out and come back again when I am more experienced and feel I am strong enough to defeat them. I get very into skyrim, cheating has no place there.
bcofer
Fun thread. I did the pure grind to level the first time through. Buy ore, smelt, craft dagger, enchant, sell dagger for more ore. Also maxed out archery and sneak mostly by sneaking up on mud crabs and rats. Ended up a totally overpowered character, and had to "cheat" with deadly dragons and other make-it-harder mods to make it fun again. Filled the orphanage with 100,000 septims. I actually cheat a lot now, for convenience. The lock minigame got old really fast. TCL when stuck or Lydia is blocking the doorway. Fast travel everywhere except out of dungeons. Balanced by using the Bag of Holding AND Bag of Trash so I don't have to go back in and pack mule. Buy my modded armor from vendor named "player.additem", etc.
PsYchotic666Joker
remove your console button off the keyboard and put it on the desk somewhere or where ever you want. boom no cheats lol as for me though..i never cheat on real playthroughs, only time i cheat is to hurry up and get someplace to test a new mod out when i am working on things, then i will reload after my testing is over and do whatever next that needs to be done, if nothing then i go play as normal, and no cheating lol. Edit: Forgot to mention i will use the console sometimes if a quest is bugged out and i need to fix it ( hardly happens though ), and i know this is not considered cheating but it involves the console....scenic screenshots i will use certain codes to get the best pictures possible for myself. DanielDuncan
The only time I ever use console codes is when game progress is halted due to glitches. It is something I call "house rules", which is just another way of saying, exorcising personal restraint, restraint to cheat. As far as I know there is no mod to get rid of the console. Even if there was a mod to get rid of the console you would actually be punishing yourself as there are quite a few quests that are broken and can only be fixed by using console codes allowing progress in those particular quests. Like others have stated here, you are just going to have to figure out what you want to be and then be it. Cheating is also subjective. You could ask a thousand people what cheating is and they will all give individual and different answers. You are going to have to come up with your OWN answer. I can also identify the source of the urge to cheat for you but you will not like the answer. Those who cannot resist those urges will undoubtedly be horrendously insulted at what I have to say about the source of the urge to cheat. You know where that urge comes from too, you just have to admit it to yourself and handle it. This is actually a problem that exists in AND out of games for those who experience it, the urge to cheat that is. It may not manifest itself in actual cheating but it is this same lack of self control that will lead to other issues that plague a person through life. Our lives can be summed up to just a struggle of making choices and competing with each other for various things. In essence and almost by definition life is a game. it is not a game by baseball standards or even Skyrim standards, but a game by definition nonetheless. Winning at life is no easy task and those who cheat certainly get an edge, this goes without saying, but those who refuse to cheat and are personally happy with what they have achieved are a thousand times more fulfilled and have a better quality of life than those who cheated to get to where they are. A large percentage of powerful people are alcoholics, this is because of the things they had to do to get to where they are, they had to find a way to cope with the decisions they had to make and thus turn to alcohol to ease their suffering, very unsuccessful people do the same thing, they too made poor decisions and they too turn to alcohol to cope. I guess there is a middle ground you could find, an equilibrium, that will bring you peace of mind, you will just have to decide what that equilibrium is for yourself, there is not a single soul on this Earth that can make these decisions for you, in real life or in game. I guess we could play your game for you, but then what is the point of that? So in the end it still rests firmly on your own shoulders. You will have to compromise with yourself to come to any conclusion, just make sure that you do not stop until you are truly satisfied with the answer you eventually settle on. Personally, I choose peace of mind over everything. If you give me a choice between being rich, like hundreds of millions of dollars rich, or more, that or living a moderate life, I will choose moderation every time. i know what "feels right", I experienced this one time in my life and have been chasing it ever since. Everything I do now must "feel right". Once you get a taste of it, even once, it is difficult to turn away from it. So get out there and experience it all until you run across something that "feels right" and once you find it, run with it.
LanOsb133
- Do you/have you ever, sometimes, maybe frequently feel the urge to open the console and cheat? Depends on the situation. For instance, I just started a new game and gave myself full armor and skills and perks that I saw fit. I also use a mod where my damage is static. You could call this cheating, I call it role playing. I start off my character the way I want and keep him relatively the same. I put the difficulty on legendary to counter my weapon being powerful. Most humans without armor take 2 hits to kill and anywhere from 2-10 if they are wearing armor. I can die in literally 1 second, and found this out earlier because of a vampire in a cave. A lot of people would consider what I did cheating but I see skyrim as a sandbox game that should be played how you want. - Outside of saying "Just stop cheating", what advice can you give to get over this urge to cheat?ROLEPLAYING! (you don't have to get serious about it) Seriously, remove the hud, remove everything that takes away the immersion and walk everywhere (AKA no fast travel ever.) It really makes the game seem so much better, bigger and all around fun especially if you use RND/Frostfall.
lofgren
- Do you/have you ever, sometimes, maybe frequently feel the urge to open the console and cheat? There is no such thing as cheating in a single player game. ESPECIALLY in a a game that you can freely mod to your heart's desire, and is absolutely INTENDED to be modded. MOST ESPECIALLY in a game like Skyrim that is designed to meet the competing desires of a vast range of players. There are definitely aspects of the game I just have no interest in. It's not cheating to install mods that diminish those aspects so why would it be cheating to simply skip them entirely with the console? - Outside of saying "Just stop cheating", what advice can you give to get over this urge to cheat? Definitely get into modding. That way you can make the game you want to play without the tedium of opening the console. At this point the mods I have created for my own use are so integral to the game that I forget that I made them myself. That includes thoroughly personalized perk overhauls, crafting tweaks, rewritten werewolves and vampires, additional spells, and custom quests and items. I have at least as much fun modding the game as I do playing it. In fact most of my mods will ever be released because I simply do not have the time to do proper bug chasing and QC. If you have the urge to cheat, that means that you feel like you can improve over the game that the developers released. Why not use the tools they devs have generously provided to implement your "cheat" in a balanced and interesting way?
mach7
I hate to say "Roleplay" because I never thought of myself as an RPer, but the most fun Skyrim play through I had was with an Altmer hunter. I installed one of thsoe hunting mods that increases game animals and their ingredient weights, and Frostfall of course. I hunted animals during the day and early evening, started a camp fire and slept until morning. Made my own armour, bows and arrows. Sold off pelts and whatnot. Had a great time. Got ambushed by bandits and came across some thalmor in a fight and picked them off when nearly dead :) I didn't even see a dragon until after level 25. Try hunting to save up for your first Hearthfire house... I had a blast and I never expected it!
