Laptops

I'm currently thinking about buying a laptop, but know next to nothing about them and would appreciate some advice on what to look for, and on good UK suppliers. :)

Its main purpose would be internet access - both at home and while away. Gaming capability would be a bonus, but from the little I know I suspect that would escalate the cost quite dramatically.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

How easy/difficult/impossible are laptops to upgrade/components to replace? What makes/types/components should be avoided?

Advice please!

From the very little I know about laptops; getting a game capable laptop definately escalates the price. I'd recommend getting a laptop with atleast 512MB of RAM and a good processor. Anything else is just a bonus. To be honest I'd go with Dell for laptops.

I use a Toshiba that works quite well. For games you need more like 1 Gig of RAM. I have 750 meg and still suffer some lags. RAM upgrades are usually cheeper if you buy them when you buy your system, I waited 6 months and had to wait while they ordered it in, and it cost about twice as much >:( . Toshiba has excellent warrenty, exspcially for international travel, and lots of dealers world wide that will do the work. The bigger screen is nice for gaming, but some of the smaller screen models weigh quite a bit less, if you are lugging it around alot.

As people have said, gaming capability = large price. I would recommend just sticking with internet access. Might be able to get one for £300-400 then, I'm not sure. Can't say I ever bought one, but a friend has one.

As far as I know you can't replace components in a laptop. It's a very compact design and I think most of the time everything is integrated with the motherboard. Thus, if anything goes wrong with any of the components you have to send it to the IT guys to take care of it. Kind of like a games console; purpose built. For upgrading there are expansion slots along the back of the laptop IIRC that you can put special sticks of RAM into and such.

One thing I know my friend learnt was never leave it plugged in, even at home, as the battery can overload and fry it. Just charge it up and then unplug. ^^;

Advice please!

There will be a huge amount of changes in the winter of 2006. Mainly because the new version of you know whos' is coming out. If you can wait a few months, like 3 months after it makes the stores shelf, you will get better competitive prices for all the other companies and software types.

If you can't wait and you want a deal, with those bonuses you are thinking of, watch the compare and shop web pages.

I wont recommend companies or offer referrals because I thought that wasn't allowed anymore.
