sunshinenbrick
Aye, the odds are stacked against us it seems. But I do like the idea of some of this down on paper... Already started a little data mining myself :D
Lisnpuppy
The lobbyists will be against any law that that removes a 'free' commodity from their grasp. That, and there is no real good way to regulate data mining......If they can mine it then it can be regulated. It really all comes down to us in the long run. 99.99% of folks don't care, don't know or are too lazy to think of this as important. If no one says anything it will keep happening. You don't even have to put extra sensitive stuff out there. They can figure it out.

If you want privacy go live off the grid somewhere in the woods. For the time being there still is a lot of freedom and transparency on the Internet, but it is not guaranteed to stay this way. Having said that, the Web itself may be 'free' but providing the content is usually only viable because of advertising, plus a lot of areas of the Web are privatised, requiring membership and/or payment to access. It is also much easier for corporations to find information on us than it is for us to find information about them... It is also perhaps worth listening when the person who invented the World Wide Web itself calls for vigilance and debate over the concerns about privacy. You may be surprised how many people who live in the woods have Internet or a phone. Going off-grid would mean more than not having an Internet connection... in ten or twenty years it may be the only way to pay taxes, bills or get paid and vote etc... etc...
