Why do people hate Fallout 4 so much?

Then there are other people, who try to give an opinion as an objective fact. They say things like "Fallout 4 is a bad game", which isn't really that bad. Some of them however feel the need to go too far and say things like "This game is a failure" or "Bethesda is incompetent". These people view the fact that the game wasn't personalized to their preferences as a slap in the face. They would rather not have a voiced protagonist, so in their eyes Bethesda has failed as a game company because they made the protagonist voiced. Forget that Bethesda is rolling in cash after one of the biggest releases in history, in the eyes of these people Bethesda have failed, all copies of the game should be returned, and the project should be handed to someone else 'more competent'.

That right. I have seen people wish beth to go bankrupt, that all the workers should die, that the game is not worth 0.99

Hey, you think fallout 4 is bad game, no problem, don't play it and refund. You know the game will have a voiced PC and the wheel, it in all the trailers. If you don't trust it, why buy the game, full price before watching it on YouTube and reading reviews to make sure it works?

I don't see why a voiced PC means a better story. New Vegas had a great sotry and no voiced PC. it had a fantastic story while still allowing m ore player choice than the average Beth game.

Better Story does not equal better story telling. They are not the same thing and differ greatly, but they go hand in hand in moving picture media.

You can make a movie with the best plot ever that fits it run time just right, but if your actors are half assing it just sucks in the end. Great actors can also make the movies with bad plot pass as okay or good. or even great.

It a very important aspect of visual entertainment that should not be ignored.

Beth thought it will deliver more impact on the player by seeing the pc reacts to the story and npcs, thus improving the questing aspect a little from one angle. But they should have focused on better lip sync and face animtions instead and they would have gotten better results from older fans.

How about instead of limiting the player to do this you stop trying to make games in to movies and instead focus those assets you used on a voice for the player on to somet hign important like writers. take the money you used on that garbage dialogue system and focus on giving the player m ore and better ways to itnerct with the world and NPCs.

Games are in a way very close to movies. In facts, games are closer to movies than books are to movies. And many what makes a game/movie good can be applied to make a good movie/game.

Actors, action, music, atmosphere, visuals and many more. There is a thin line between the two since both are moving pictures based media thingy. The only real cinematic thing about fo4 is the dialogue cam, and it really nice.

They say that no good RPGs have a voiced character but they do, The Dragon Age Series, Guild Wars 2, and others that get high praise. Another thing that they complain about is the graphics. I know games recently have been photo realistic, but if you judge a game by the graphics than you shouldn't be calling yourself a gamer. In the last two years there have been many good games that aren't photo realistic and expecting an A list game to look like that is just stupid.

Overall I prefer a non-voiced protagonist because I prefer to hear things with my own inner-voice. The voices used rarely fit what I imagine my character to be like. That's very immersion breaking. I expect many experienced RPG players feel the same way. If it isn't too bad (so far FO4 has been OK) then it won't ruin the experience, but it also adds nothing.

Take something like DAI however, and the protagonist voice did ruin the experience. Well, didn't ruin it really since DAI is already hands-down the worst video game I've ever played. I'm including E.T. in that assessment. How exactly BiowEAre could take the one of the most brilliant RPGs of all time (DAO) and follow it up with complete crap is beyond me. I think even DAII ended up being better. I fell asleep playing DAI, repeatedly. Not kidding. It's just that boring. I have more fun running to my local Meijer and finding every instance of 6-packs of AA batteries everywhere in the store and putting them in a cart! And then doing the same thing with packages of black socks! Wheeeeeeeeeeee!! Oh, I mean Zzzzzzzzzzz!

FO4 is a brilliant sequel in every way compared with the complete crap coming out of post-EA BiowEAre. I've heard very few bad things about FO4 except for the performance-related issues (how can it run so dreadfully and simultaneously offer zero in the way of great graphics or even the excellent aesthetics of FO3).

I haven't met a single person who dislikes it. In fact I even have a female friend who said she's so interested she's going to buy a console just to buy the game and it will be the first video game she's ever played.

You have to be a hardcore RPG player to hate it. Not many of them around since Fo3 and oblivion.

That a bad choice for a void game though. Couldn't she pick something with less bugs?

I hear that a lot. Read a post in reddit about someone who plays fo4 v with his mother over him since she likes the songs, and now likes the game. One guy was using power armor on ps4, and his father sat next him with his mouth open since he entered the PA. He used a jetpack and his father jumped saying wow.

We all did the same in the E3 old man, we all did.

I love when video game groups people like that. It just so sweet.

I'm sure if my I showed it my dad though, he will throw my rig outside the window.

Her ex played a lot of FO3 so she got to watch a lot and got interested in the franchise.

I agree.

If you made the pc class, you get a back story. I swear those 10X better than all the quests in the game.

DAI failed way more as a sequel and as a video game than fallout 4 did and get less uproar about it since it was so pretty and had great npcs. My sister is a DA player, says it was freaking chore to play compared to the older ones. I heartily agreed with her. We kept it at for the npcs sake only.

Don't even get me started on the lore. Yes it a sequel, but for god sake introduce it better. An hour in and I felt it was to much and hard to know. I had to read guides about lore to know what was going in, gave up in mid game and made the main quest even worse for me. It was not that bad, has good cliff hangers, but meh. Why do I care to save people who hate my guts? The ending made less sense than Bioshock 3 and it screamed "DLC!" in the very last frames.

And guess what, there is a dlc about the ending.

Then we get to world. It a great eye candy at first hours but that it. It a base for fetch and find quests. Later you get to a Skyhold of sorts. While realistically sized, it was a chore to find all the npcs you want to talk with to advance their plot. I had to spend an hour finding them all the first time.

Then the war table.

"Oh you want to go on with a story? Wait half a day in real time!"

I ended the main quest, never touched it again. I watched the npcs in YouTube and called it a day. My sister forgot the game was even made in the first place. I never felt like I wasted money before.

A lot of the criticism levelled at DAI is fair and I sincerely hope Bioware take it on board for ME:Andromeda and the next DA game.

However, I will say one thing. If you ever feel like giving it another go there are a lot of good mods out there now that remove much of the grindy horrible busy work - like making all the war table missions complete immediately, and another one that makes the camera zoom in more when you're talking to people so you're not stuck in the rafters somewhere.

As for FO4, it saddens me a little to see how many things are becoming the industry standard. Like the console style dialogue interface. I'm not opposed to it per se, except when it's used to obscure meaning, and to cut down on the overall number of dialogue choices.

Fallout 4 core mechanics are great. It's a wonderfull game for modders and deserve the "Sandbox" label. BUT ...

It has been probably ruined by the Team in charge of the port on PC. You can't just Copy/Paste Controls/ Memory management from a Console to a PC. You can't tell your KB/mouse to act as a Gamepad and much more, you can't expect a 970/980 or R9 rendering compared to a 7870's console GPU rendering ...

Well Bethesda PC team in charge clearly despise PC users.

p. It made an improvement in Fallout NV over Fallout 3 but has regressed again.

well, Chris Avellone worked on fo2 and fonv... among other excellent titles... I know one person does not a great game make, but everything he gets involved in I have enjoyed, for the writing and RPGness... though of course some of these titles do railroad you, most allow many ways to ride that rail.

just look at notable game credits: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Avellone

Old Fallout player here.

The kind of guy who was (and still is) generally dismissed as "looking at everything with nostalgia goggles" when explaining why FO3 is a heresy with a TERRIBLE plot.

I've been playing every single Elder Scrolls game since Daggerfall. I love what Bethesda does with their own established universe.
And I was really happy when the Fallout license became their property becasue I was already imagining a brilliant RPG with an amazing, fully-explorable world.

Boy did I cry when it went out.
Granted, the world to explore is here, but the story was so dull, the writing so bland, the quests so uninventive.

Again, I love Bethesda's work with TES, but these guys have ZERO IDEA of what Fallout is.

Everything is extremely PC, even though it tries hard to look edgy. "Ooooh, you can blow up Megaton." Yeah, big f***ing deal.

I have a high Charisma and I'm an excellent negociator, can I talk to the leader of these raiders and avoid a fight ? Nope, they're all hostile, kill them.
But this guy has a name ! Surely it means I can do a quest with him ? Nope, hostile.

Okay, but at least I have a high intelligence, surely I can debate with this scientist ? Nope, you have to ask him stupid questions.
Are you kidding me ? Even I can tell were this conversation is going but my INT9 guy can't ? Just ask the questions we've written for you.

I rushed the (poor) main quest, was disappointed by its (poor) conclusion, uninstalled it and never touched it again. The Steam counter says 65 hours, I've given this game A LOT of time to prove itself but it never delivered.

Fallout 1 & 2 not only allowed you to blow up entire places, you could also be a pornstar, join raiders, become a slaver, force your wife/husband into prostitution, communicate with growls and drooling if your intelligence was under 3, remove the brain of your companion (or your dog, or your newlywed follower) to put it in a robot, kill children purposedly to obtain the "childkiller" trait, become an expert grave looter, among MANY other things you will never see in a modern RPG, let alone a Bethesda game. They would never even DARE try a single one of those things (children are unkillable).

Did you HAVE to do all of this ? Absolutely not.

Did you have the possibility to do it anytime you wanted ? YES.

Were you able to shoot anyone or anything you met even though it could cancel an entire questline ? YES.

Was there always another way to progress in the main quest if you killed an important character ? YES.

And then New Vegas came out. Co-written by Chris Avellone. The man behind Fallout 2.
Suddenly, even though everything wasn't perfect, it felt like Fallout again. Tangible factions, choices that REALLY matter, a main quest that can be resolved in many different ways, dark humor, Mutants with a brain and the ability to communicate, and the desert, the scorching sun, the geckos...

Now Fallout 4 is out and Bethesda is acting as if anything happening on the West Coast is irrelevant. They have established "their" Fallout on the East-Coast and they stick to it. No matter how much old fans complain and how much established lore they take a dump on. "It just has to look relatively similar, we own the place anyway now."

The dialogue system is the biggest piece of crap to have landed on the series.

It breaks immersion, your 4 choices are ALWAYS the same (yes/no/sarcastic/question).
You never really know what's going to be said, but hey it doesn't really matter, your choice is of no consequence since the NPC's answer will be the same almost everytime, and your SPECIAL points are totally irrelevant outside of charisma.
Oh, even if you fail your charisma check, it's of no consequence either, you just won't get your little extra money and xp...

One of the most popular mods out there is NewDialog. Which tells a lot.

But do I despise Fallout 4 as much as I (really) hate Fallout 3 ? No. Certainly not.

I've already passed the 200h cap on Steam, so it would be safe to say I'm having a lot of fun with it. But not for the reasons I loved F1&2.
Bethesda is very good at designing worlds and telling stories with the environment. Fallout 4's Commonwealth is really, REALLY enjoyable to explore and that's what's saved the game IMO.

And the fact the game is set in Boston can't make me hate it. I love Boston, its History, its landscape, its monuments.

Beth's writing skill is AWFUL and they don't know what Fallout is supposed to be, even after Obsidian showed them how things could be done with New Vegas.
