All the hate

As Fallout it barely reaches 5/10.

I get to agree, to bad since everything else is point.

Walking around in Baston feels like walking around D.C, but it larger, scarier and more eventual. Buildings both pre-war and new are great in and out, the music on the radio is great, the mods look real rugged on weapon, like real scarped out parts.

However, the combat system need to balance between melee and shooter, and make the RPG aspect stronger. Expect if they maybe didn't want the game to be an RPG after all.

Only a few problems with it ~20 hours in.

Perk system is very limiting without a skill system. There are so many things related to "skills" and ability slipped into the perk system and hidden behind level requirements that it feels like they just want you to spend dozens of hours just grinding out levels for the sake of progress. Have 4 perk points, and have a master level lock that you want to unlock so you don't have to trek back through a raider encampment, well too bad, you still need to be level 45+ to unlock it. So instead of taking interesting perks, you have to take relatively uninteresting ones because they're connected with progression.

The map and areas feel extremely empty. Interiors are small, and are very rare within city limits. And what interiors there are that I've seen don't have that depth of character like they did in previous fallouts. It just feels, empty and hollow. You go off randomly exploring a ruin hoping for it to have something interesting, and just come up empty.

Meanwhile settlements have structures in them that you can't demolish, leaving you relatively little flat space to build things on. Sure, you have these nice houses, but they're full of holes you can't patch up since all the collision boxes are overly sensitive. The sensitive collision boxes also make the problem of building exterior walls a real annoyance. Things that should fit together don't, and when they do, the bottom of the thing is 2 feet off the ground because it considers the little angular supports part of the structure... Nevermind the duplicate pieces.

These parts just feel poorly designed and overly simplified.

I was really suprised when I saw user's review on metaritic. The gap between Critic review and user's review is so big.

I agree there are several issues but I didn't know it will create this much hate.

Maybe the standard for open-world games have increased since The Witcher 3, maybe it's because of the hype, maybe because the game while improves on several aspect, it removes several things that was not a problem in the first place (i.e. weapon holster, non-voiced protagonist, perks/skill dialogue check, etc.).

If this game fails to be GOTY, maybe it will give quite a punch for Bethesda to improve more for the next game.

Even though I can't say this is Bethesda's masterpiece, I'm still enjoying the game. I think this will draws me in just like Fallout 3, FNV, and Skyrim.

Do you think it's a bad decision for using the "modified" creation kit? Should Bethesda create a new angine?

I don't know why you all are hating on this game so much

rpg element reduced

What did you guys expect? Fallout 4 being a lot better than fallout 3? Look at fallout 1 & 2 and compare to fallout 3 & new vegas. What do you think most Fallout 1 & 2 players felt when fallout 3 was released at first? Hate. War probably never changes, but games do. Get over it. For gods sake, enjoy this beautiful masterpiece while you can, and enjoy it even more when mods release.

Think positive. Bethesda focused more on the combat, first-person shooter element than the rpg element. Then we have modders who create player-made DLCs, and enhance the rpg element and storyline. I'm currently at 10+ hours and enjoying the game to the max.

People have different opinions, that's healthy.

Yeah, but most opinions come from players who haven't played the game which leads to more players not wanting to play the game, and decides to join the hate train. It's just ridiculous.

Why must people make sweeping generalisations. Unless you've gone around and met most people you can't and won't know the answer to that.

People who like or hate a game are not on a train, they have an opinion, its going to differ person to person.

What? That's most flawed assumption ever. Hype bandwagon was strong in recent months. Now it will crash into concrete wall. And if my opinion stops anyone from buying this game than I'll be happy. This game is closer to Borderlands than Fallout when it comes to game mechanics. Problem here is simple: Borderlands is FPS - not RPG. And Fallout is supposed to be RPG. And in Fallout 4 with it's terrible dialogues and painfully streamlined character development we don't have basic elements of any RPG. Combat is good, weapon building system is also ok. Change the name and this game would be easily 7/10. As Fallout it barely reaches 5/10.

I'm only 3 hours in but right now Fallout 4 is FPS. In fact, it's basically Half Life 2 ripoff.

Hoping for some RPG elements to crop up but it's not looking likely.

I have to put my 2 cents in as a meh. I don't hate it and I don't love it. Some people have compared this to Mass Effect and I have to disagree with that as I couldn't wait to get in and game. Instead of Playing Fallout 4, with no one to bother me i.e. wife, kids, phone, etc... I just do not feel like it and when I do its for an hour max and then I quit and play something else or go to bed.

After reading quite a few reviews I think this is what is making people upset.

Skyrim was a very new and unique Rpg. Even with its problems was still a fun game with lots and lots of options.

Fallout 4 had they expectations of Skyrim based on the engine and how well the staff did on that game presumed it would be done on FO4.

If they would not have taken away some stuff and then replaced it with half assed stuff it would not be so bad. The leveling is a joke, why would you need to be a level 10 beach bully to be able to build a structure, or have to be a raging nerd to be able to modify a weapon. or like this game does and says nope you have to be the size of a beach bully but smarter then a brain surgeon to make a pillow.

I like the combat takes a little to get used to for an RPG but if you look at it from an FPS its how they play.

I do not like the options in conversations 4 is just lazy imho.

I do not really care for the companions for the way the are used. i should not have to go through 3 menus to tell Meat to find enemies or loot. I do like that Codsworth says my name, when he talks to me, and not Hi "insert name here" how are you doing.

I think they tried to please all gamer types by encompassing elements from each but failing in the overall picture. Some of this could have been fixed in a true closed beta or even with a consumer group. But then again I am a nobody gamer, who prays that the modders will fix what is wrong and enhance what is good.

I would have been pissed though if I would have spent the money on the CE Pip boy, knowing you can use your phone to do the same thing.

Well, the CE pipboy IS your phone.

You just put it inside of that plastic thingy. XD

I understand why people hate on the game.

But I don't understand the amount of hate.

It's a good game.

I think the talking player character isn't so bad.

In fact I always thought it was stupid that my character is silent in Fallout 3 and New Vegas.

I like how the dialogues switches camera perspective now too.

And I don't really mind the 4 options thing that much.

If there is a topic that needs it's own several options it's just a submenu.

However I don't really understand the hate for the skill system.

I think it works fine.

It's not better or worse than in Fallout 3 or New Vegas, it's just different.

Of course the coice to rush lockpicking as soon as possible is valid.

On the other hand science and lockpicking were always the first two things I rushed to 100 to open everything.

Now I focus on other sutff first.

Btw. the non human creatures got a huge boost in fighting capabilities.

Feral Ghouls can actually get really dangerous now.

Especially if there's a glowing one.

I like it.

This is a pretty good summary of how I feel about it. I was hoping it would be at least on the level of Skyrim, but in my opinion it's not even close. That doesn't mean it won't be enjoyable to play, but I have no doubt that after I reach the end of the main quest lines I'll be setting this aside and starting a new play through of Skyrim.
