New Video Card

I'm kind of tired of only getting 15-30 frames per second on medium settings. I've tried a few of the 'performance boost' tweaks but none of them really fit for me, so I'm asking for a new video card for Christmas.

Right now I have an AMD Radeon HD 8670D, which obviously came with the computer. I'm looking for something that can run Fallout 4, doesn't have to be on Ultra or anything, just something that can handle it smoothly and be able to run some future games as well. Preferably something under 300 dollars, or something that'll be on sale on Black Friday.

I've looked around here and there myself, but I seem to have expensive taste and the ones I like are all 500+ dollars. So, I'm looking for a few options. Hints I can drop my wife that wont break the Christmas budget... since we have more people to buy for than just me!

I am also upgrading my video card as well. The GTX 960 will be able to play the game on Ultra around 55fps which is under your budget. The GTX 970 which will definitely handle Fallout 4 no problem is a bit over your budge. $300 to $350. I recommend the GTX 970, because well, you are here. Which means you want to mod and we all know we want better looking aesthetics. So, that video card will give you some wiggle room. BTW, until you get your new video card. I recommend a guide to tweak your INI files. I couldn't find my original guide because Nvidia took it down. But this should help. https://www.reddit.com/r/fo4/comments/3skr7o/ultimate_fallout_4_pc_tweak_guide/

Thing is, just a new videocard probably wont help you much, it's everything around it that decides how well that videocard will perform. Processor, ram and motherboard are just as important. You said it came with the PC so i assume it's an off the shelf system? It's ussually not worth it to upgrade those.

If you do go down that road, It's better to start looking at the minimum specs for fallout 4 and see how close your rig is to those specs. See how much it will cost to upgrade to minimum specs at least and how much it will set you back to recommended specs.

Decide if it's worth it for you and save your money to buy/build a good rig.

Something like this is probably a better investment then spending 500 dollars on just a videocard for your current rig:

Make a list of the parts and see what you can grab on black friday. That was just one of the first google results there's heaps more with good advice for budget systems. And offcourse take a look at the nexus forum hardware and software topics.

http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04079597 This would be my current PC. Which might not be the best out there, but considering most things I get are gifts... I can't complain about it. The video card came with it in a bundle deal if I remember correctly, but either way there are the specs I currently have.

It all comes down to the simple fact I'm asking for a present and a new computer again this year might be a bit much. Which is why I'm asking for a graphics card instead. 300 is actually a high estimate but I'm hoping that some of those in that price range hit a sale on Black Friday or close too it.

I'll definitely keep the GTX 970 on the list. It's a bit more than I want to ask for, but not enough it should break the bank. Who knows, maybe my mother in law will be nice and chip in for once... doubt it... but a guy can hope!

I have a gtx660 and run between 30-60 fps on a mix of high/ultra. I do have a great i7 cpu and 16gb of ram though. The ram isn't all that big of deal, you should be able to get away with 8. You can get the 660 for under 200 easily. But bear in mind that it's not going to get you into the next gen of gaming. The card is very dated.

You're better off going to a forum for enthusiasts honestly. They can direct you towards the best deals to fit into your budget. The 970 is in fact quite good still and I'd recommend that over a lower tier card if it fits your budget.

Looking at your rig, it seems like you have decent ram and a decent processor that isn't really tailored for gaming but is pretty good. Your rig should be able to handle the 970 just fine. It'll also handle something like the 660 but for slightly higher price the 970 will age much better. I know next to nothing about amd graphics cards (never used them) , so I can offer no help if you wish to go that route.

That might help you. This person here had a similar issue. That subreddit in general will probably help you.

Yeah. I know there are a lot of things to factor in and I some how doubt I'll be getting something top of the line. I'm going to ask for the GTX 970 and hope for the best, but I've also given her the two recommended cards from the Fallout 4 requirements and the older GTX 660 that was mentioned here too. It should be enough options that she can find something... or at least enough options that someone at the store can help her find something. We'll see.

I appreciate all the help.

Kinda necroing here, but I thought I'd offer a little encouragement to keep your hopes up. I purchased a 970 supersuperclocked edition for $250 days before f4 released. It was a newegg pre black friday sale so I'd expect some similar sales throughout the holiday season. If your family is savvy and determined enough to find something you'd be thrilled with I think it's a good bet you could convince them to grab a 970 for you if you do a little scouring and persuading yourself  It's definitely a great card btw, I got it to run vogue enb (the max version of the preset running at 1080p) with only my shadow distance settings turned down with a consist 45-55 fps. Hope you get what you wish for this Christmas!

(edit: $250 after finagling in a $30 rebate I think was meant for non sale prices. Gotta be thrifty :P )
