Automatic Weapons ? Why ?

been trying to figure out the upside of using automatic weapons - just can't come up with a "why" these would be useful. The best I can figure out is -- more ammo usage -- hitting for less each time.

could someone please explain what I'm missing here.

Thank You.

Well, it depends, really.

The most obvious game changer are legendary effects. If you find an Irradiated Minigun, well, that's 25 to 100 (depending on your perks) extra points of radiation damage PER BULLET, and it pretty much pwns any human. Or if you find a SMG with Explosive, well, shooting 10 rounds with the extra explosive damage in one second helps a lot more than if it were only like 2 rounds in a second with an Explosive bolt-action rifle.

The second is that basically while they do less damage per shot, they might do a lot more per second or per VATS burst. If weapon A does twice the damage per shot of weapon B, but weapon B shoots 10 round bursts in VATS, well, you do the maths.

Of course, if you have all the time in the world, then go with the ammo conservation. But when you ran into two supermutants, one with a minigun and one with a missile launcher (I wish it were just an example, but I had the misfortune), you tend to not just want them dead, but you want them dead FAST.

You are most definitely missing out here. Max out the Commando perk [gives +100% extra damage when using automatic weapons I think?] then install this mod - Legendary Modification

http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/4042/?

Then mod your autoweapon with the Legendary mod Furious [ Increased damage after each consecutive hit on the same target] and watch your enemies evaporate into red mist!

I've maxed out the Silver SMG and I just LOVE IT - There is nothing finer than mowing down your enemies in a hail of Tommy Gun fire. I can kill Behemoths with 50 or so rounds as long as I don't miss with my fire.

The Tommy Gun [sub-machine gun] can have a 100 round drum and is the closest thing to a Light Machine gun in the game thus far. I've renamed the Silver SMG to Righteous Fury btw. It really fits with the Silver Shadow theme.

I used to be a sniper/stalker style of player before but now I'm a runner/gunner. I've also tricked out a Laser Rifle with the Legendary Irradiated mod [does 50 points of extra damage] so I'm doing something like 140+ points of damage with each shot. With a long Range Scope I can still use it as a sniper rifle as well so it's my long to mid range weapon and for close in work I use the Tommy Gun.

Honestly, it depends on what KIND of weapon and for what PURPOSE you use it for.

A stealth character doesn't need automatic weapons and benefits from single shot weapons more often than not. I think you should dedicate one weapon for travel out in the open (unless you spam Fast Travel and don't run into those situations) as well as a "Get outta dodge" kind of weapon as stealth. But in that case you'd take Rifleman and be done with it.

Automatic weapons are really for non stealth characters, and the trade off is more DPS and less burst damage. You go for headshots, quick and clean as a stealth character (unless melee) so you need to be precise.

With the appropriate mods for recoil compensation and perks to boost weapon damage types, you can be effective with anything. It's really piss poor starting out, and no, without perks, you should never take automatic because it's total ballz without boosting it.

There's another difference: energy versus ballistic.

Ballistic ammo is FAR cheaper than energy ammo, and honestly, you're kind of doing it wrong if you make an energy weapon full auto, since it will have similar damage to a ballistic gun, but you will run out of Fusion Cells, Plasma Cartridges, and Fusion Cores far more than you will .45 ammo or others. Enemies carry more ballistic ammo fed guns, so it's easy to be liberal about applying a spray and pray tactic, whereas you will be hard pressed to amass such an arsenal with Energy Weapons. It's far more cost efficient to be accurate and semi auto with Energy Weapons. Hell, getting 4K .38 ammo for your pipe weapons is simple, just pick up every gun you find, and then drop it on the ground for a free mag's worth.

The only Energy Weapon that you should have full auto is the Gatling Laser. Everything else, you are kidding yourself and wasting so much more that you could have saved. The only reason you should consider otherwise is if there's a badass legendary mod on your gun from the game, or you take the easy way out and install a mod to do it for you (no shame in it, it's a single player game, but let's be honest about how cheap it makes cheesing the game that's already not hard with a little forethought before engaging).

Every ballistic gun that CAN be automatic, there's not an argument against it, it's more preference, what you want the gun to do. Honestly, I think the 10mm auto pistol sucks and much prefer it to be semi auto to control my fire to where I want it to go. the Submachine gun, combat rifle, and assault rifle I like to be automatic, hell, even the auto mod for the shotty is nice.

What would be REALLY cool, and I know that the modders will grant my wish, is a Select Fire mod, where you can have the benefits of both (included as a Rank 4 Gun Nut and maybe also max rank Rifleman and Commando perks to craft) semi auto and auto, where it changes the damage stats of the gun for you, so you can choose whether or not to engage with a specific type of firing, like in real life.

That's why I choose one of the dedicated rifles to be auto, and the other not, so I have what I want when I want it.

Well, I will admit that it would be nice to just flip a lever on the weapon and have one or the other. You have to realize though that VERY different perks affect one or the other. I would focus on either one or the other myself, not on both.

At least not in the beginning. When you're level 80 and running out of other ideas, then you can mix it up by the ear.

Personally, I'm a sniper type person. However, automatic weapons do have their place in my arsenal. I would rather have a small, safe, hide where I can load up my sound suppressed .50 calibre sniper rifle, and just start, slowly, carefully, servicing targets down range. Typically, I find myself after one or two shots, having to switch over to my Tommy gun, and moving the poor bastards down. Spitting out a few hundred bullets does make it easier. I wish the game engine was better at things, and I could snipe my way through to one point. Then, when I breach the door, I can just throw on a gas mask, and gas everyone to unconsciousness, and not have to deal with anyone. And if I felt like taking stuff from the unconscious, then a double tap to the noggin will squelch any resistance. Of course the gas affects everything, from ghouls to synths, but in different ways. The gas makes it foggy for ghouls to not see, hear, etc. anything, and they keep sleeping. Human types, and even super mutants, are knocked out. The synths, the same as both ghouls and humans, the gas affects their electronics so they go night-night. I guess due to the age of the engine, as well as other factors, we have to rely more and more on perks that anything else, really.

Oh, rapid fire does make things easier. Just, the weapon doesn't have to be flagged as automatic for that, basically. You can just go "click-click-click-click" on the mouse with a fast firing semi-auto, and maybe switch to a shotgun when they really get up close, and then it's all under a single set of perks.

The weapons in the game were just badly done. The longer I play fallout 4 the more painfully apparent it becomes that while the weapon models look good how they function is just bleh. In answer to your question automatic weapons really don't serve a purpose in the game other then they feel fun to shoot. I guess we just have to wait for the geck whenever they get around to releasing it.
