Survival Mode...ridiculous or just not fun?

After playing in Survival Mode for quite awhile now I have come to the conclusion that it brings nothing fun to the game. Survival mode doesn't feel like survival...it feels like work...tasks. And when I finish said "tasks" I don't feel any sense of accomplishment. I get it, its suppose to be this ultimate hardcore hard level of play. I did feel like I was fighting for my life, but only during stressful gun fights and battles. Not when I am scrounging around looking for a place to sleep just to save the game. That's when the game stopped being fun. Also you MUST sleep in a bed mattress, not a sleeping bag or even on the ground cause your character will still be tired which I found ridiculous. The sleep method in survival mode is frustrating. Its like Bethesda doesn't know squat about outdoor survival or didn't bother to really look into it. They just implemented it based on just the game assets. I have slept outdoors before (in real life), in a sleeping bag, and tho I didn't get a great nights rest, I wasn't tired when I woke up. Also the constant "thirst" (and even more so when you use a stimpak), the two items of food I have to eat just to be satiated is so ridiculous. Maybe i'm nitpicking, but I found Survival mode just sucked the fun right out of the game and became taxing and more stressful then I like in my Bethesda games. Maybe I am too spoiled with Skyrim and how easy mods made surviving that game. I dunno. I don't look forward to playing through on Survival Mode, not because I don't like the challenge but because its just not fun to me.

Loving it.

Added the "Traits and More Perks" mod, and the first thing I gave myself was "Fear the Reaper" and "Swift Learner".

It's extremely harsh, but I always play stealth and sniper anyway so I can dig it.

It doesn't have to be for everyone, but it is pretty awesome imho.

Personally I think it's the fawkin' Bee's Knees! I always played Hardcore in New Vegas, but this Survival Mode Rules the Earth.

I hadn't played FO4 in a couple of months, but this Mode makes it a whole new game.

Hope they don't change a thing.

I like it so far, I modded in the console, quicksave and quick travel as it was annoying as heck having to travel across the map and back for a radiant quest. Some things are annoying like the constant sleeping and eating, but other than that I like having to cure illness and whatnots.

"Survival mode doesn't feel like survival...it feels like work...tasks."
dust THE TOTAL INSPIRATION - I'm not quite entirely into the complete lack of things for fallout 4, but the emphasis of less gun usage or at least for it to be harder to pull off is important to me I'm still nowhere near balancing my personal setup)
around 18:55 for a few mintues, ammo gone, throwing weapons are picked up out of sheer desperation, this mod probably is why fallout 4's survival mode is the way it is
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8kzSrhsiG84

they're also making one called FROST for fallout 4, DUST is for new vegas, oh ye lawds this gon b gud
to better represent an apocalyptic survival-horror atmosphere. Combat, weather, perks, loot, enemies, you name it. Some areas have even been visually overhauled. All vanilla NPCs have either been killed or changed beyond all recognition. You will not be able to complete quests or join factions. There is but one quest in DUST. Stay alive.

The ideal way to find out about what it was like to live in prehistoric times would be to talk to someone who had actually experienced it. So I did.

John Rossetti was one of fifteen people who took part in the BBC's 'Living in the Past' experiment in 1977/8. They lived in iron age conditions for thirteen months, and showed remarkable dedication to the project. They even, without being required to, ploughed the fields again at the end of the project, just to show that they were able to keep the pattern of agricultural life going. They grew their own food, made their own clothes, kept about 100 mammals and a bee hive, and did without modern soaps, entertainments, and safety equipment.

it isn't survival until you appreciate the small things in life
I've been trying to alter the game so that it's slightly less obsessive about being a shooter FPS with the occaisonal water drinking popup, to the point where it's SLIGHTLY reminiscent of DUST for new vegas, I'm trying to figure out a way to get throwing weapons to be proper thrown weapons (at least for VATS usage even there has to be an identically named weapon and ammo combo for it) - you know, less bullets in general, but alternatives, gotta really take care of yourself more or less
but with CSE spawns and some other stuff there's no shortage of enemies, combat and ammo
I've modded it so that firearms suck compared to melee mostly to an extent, also edited files from "less gun users" to make even fewer gun users in general
raiders have started pulling a red army tactic of taking guns straight from comrade's corpses now in fact, and the piper intro scene had me blasting away throwing mines, molotovs, grenades a ton, "wasted" a ton of ammo, was sooooo fun - also using arbitration and CSE (max spawns basically for NPC's) so it was an absolute killing field but desperate too
died a ton of times actually, was usually me getting weakened by pathetic pipe guns (I've edited them to do a bit of bleed and a bit of poison and use railroad nails and corresponding loot drops too) - but a melee guy would get me from behind typically, LOVE IT. with less gun users (but there's a good variety, gunners still exist and have a better correlation, while higher level super mutants and raiders also have guns more often and I've manually merged all the new gun mods except the 14.7mm using anti-tank rifle one) so it's a freaking goldmine of fun, really nice
feels like mad max, I still have plenty of ammo actually, but it's on my mind, I'm still balancing it
haven't figured out a way to make LOADS ammo types get ammo because I can't edit the weights even in overrides for whatever reason (so annoying)
but, I've used most of my .38 ammo, all my railroad nail ammo, moving onto .45 etc, shotgun shells are plentiful as well etc, because even though I've tweaked things there's still plenty of ammo, things have less life a bit, but mostly it's melee that's the killer, for fun and balance (with throwing weapons as an aside that I haven't managed to properly balance or make interestingly functional so irritating argh but once this is done the game will be almost PERFECT)

(my ideas for what I'm trying to do with changes is here)
https://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/4088460-thrown-weapons-that-are-actually-weapons-not-grenades/

there's also various mods for saves and quick travel, I'm using a quick save mod that adds an aid item into your inventory, also using the quick travel mod that allows for quick travel to sanctuary, the home plate (you have to buy it first I think though for this to work) and some other place, just to keep it convenient but light
I haven't quite gotten things down for a truly hardcore paranoid maniac style run, I think a few more mods to alter gameplay fundamentally and it'll be doable

It is poor game design, simple as that.

The same way someone can claim that giving a boss 90,000 hp makes for a challenging boss fight. In reality it is just poor design and a gimmick to try to make a challenge. To create a real challenge you have to think outside the box and not just make the player do menial tasks and repeat things because they can't save.

Can we all agree it makes the game a more challenging one, but it is far from perfect? It has ideas that are good, yet some were executed poorly?

I have only fought one "bullet sponge" so far, and it was a Yao Guai. I had to jump on an overturned train and blast it, then hop down to lure it back out from cover, and blast it again and jump back on the carriage before it ate me. It took a fair while because it was a 'skull icon' enemy. I enjoyed every minute of it.

BUT the enemy in mention was a beast, and it seemed feasible that a massive irradiated beast would feel less pain, and be able to withstand such injuries.

Human enemies taking 2 chambers of lead to the face in a sneak attack should NOT be able to get back up and keep fighting though. Totally agree about that.
