Recommend a Card

I don't think there's any need for anything above a GTX 460 or a HD 6850, however, a MSI HD 6950 2GB Twin Frozr (a totally lovely aftermarket cooler setup) for $230 after MIR is a danged good deal my friend:

Tough call without knowing what resolution or PSU you are using. GTX 560 Ti should be good if you are looking for a relatively future proof solution and your PSU is good enough. If cost is more of an issue, getting another 460 may be advisable if you can find it. Most of the major outlets seems to have phased them out unfortunately but you should still be able to find one if you are willing to go the ebay route.

I would 4th or 5th, or whatever we are on for a 560 and 6950 for price and power.

As for the 580... well it's your money, and can you even get one for $350? If you can I'd just as well say get that as that sounds cheap to me.

And it's the op that says he has a 460. But the thread is about what his bro should get...

(I'm just gonna squeeze in here, sorry)

Any recommend cards right now, maybe tweaked versions of the 560 ti or something similar for $150-200 usd?

Also.. Any good? => http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=14-127-545&SortField=0&SummaryType=0&Pagesize=10&PurchaseMark=&SelectedRating=-1&VideoOnlyMark=False&VendorMark=&IsFeedbackTab=true&Page=2#scrollFullInfo

I'm also looking to max Skyrim in the cheapest possible way lol. Its pretty much top priority, and I doubt D3 will cause any trouble

later on...

A 560 ti for 190 after rebate.. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814134131 Thoughts?

ya... http://techreport.com/articles.x/21516/5

Its a pretty great article on the issues with the duel GPU cards...

so these dual GPU cards have stuttering problems (1 slow frame then 1 much faster [caused by latency in the 2 GPUs communication] most notably when approaching points of heavy strain) wich in allot of cases completely ruins the benifit of the 2 cores... ironically the only stat shown in typical benchmark tests is average frame rate and that is relatively low so it makes them seem much better than they actually are... lol

it seems that NVidea and AMD released them even though they knew these cards had these pretty complicated issues ><

I think I'll recommend him the GTX 560 Ti, but I'll be sure to tell him about all the more efficient options. Great article about SLI stuttering, btw. That might save me a huge headache when I'm wondering whether to SLI my GTX 460.

I recently upgraded my brothers card to the nVidia 550 Ti as it was an ideal fit for his Lanbox case ;)

He had an old 7800GTX for the past few years and was in need of upgrading.

This new card is doing just fine for him now so I would also suggest others in the this range, the 560 Ti cards or the AMD 6950 range too.

@ninjagoat4- Can't really say anything about Radeon since I have little experience with them but it looks like a solid card and MSI is a well known company. From what I was able to google, it is somewhat less powerful than the 560 ti but it uses a little less power. I don't know anyone who has ever had to deal with stuff from ECS though. Either one should net you more than 30fps on high settings with your average monitor so long as Skyrim isn't coded like crap.

Since you said 580 I would recommend a 570 I got one my self and I am pretty happy with it. 1st off it ranks 2nd on benchmarks so its just under the 580. They make a 1280mb and 2560mb then $ ranges from 304 to 399 all in all a very high end card within your $ range. If you get the 2560mb one you can throw anything at it and it will eat it for breakfast
