Far Harour DLC sums up FO4 woes

Far Harbour is a great location for what it represents. The 'art' (texture work) is pretty good, the voice acting is pretty good and the design of the island is all Fallout fans could hope for. The 'foggy' 'motif' is well enough realised with pretty good particle work.

But where, oh where, oh where is the GAMEPLAY. This is a WALKING SIMULATOR (in the modern parlance of a LOT of very tedious indie games made on mostly free to use engines). But even as a walking simulator, the lack of any good reason to explore (no collectables- far too few unique assets to see) is dreadful.

We have a scenario based on 'Lovecraft', 'The Fog', and lots of other spooky isolated horror references. But this game can't even get the horror right. "monsters that come out of the fog"- WHAT A JOKE! The RPG FPS gameplay is SO broken (a fear of what the player may not be able to cope with, due to player choices), Beth designers refuse to ever blitz the player with a nasty stream of frightening opponents. I mean what if the player is 'over encumbered' and can't 'run away'- why that player would cry like a baby if a sudden confrontation meant certain death- so Beth designers just don't take the risk.

DUMBED DOWN 'challenges' for the assumed LAMEST players kill any idea of making dungeons 'spicy'.

So Far Harbour has me asking "WHAT IS THE POINT OF FALLOUT NOW?". No gameplay (of any imagination, surprise or challenge). No great story and charaters like in Witcher 3. Almost no collectables or unique items or 'dungeon story' elements to REWARD exploring.

Look, I get to the main hotel, and its a great location in theory. But the 'use' of the location is knuckle-dragging super mutant placement for lame and very familiar FPS combat. There's nothing unique to see there, save for the general design. No great story in holotapes, terminals, or clear post apocalyptic use of the interior.

Remember how NV had all those great story saturated dungeon interiors, where cut-n-paste was replaced with room design to a PURPOSE. What does FO4 give us? A bowling alley that, what a shock, contains a ruined bowling alley. And yes, I know, the BA 'dungeon' in FH was a rare dungeon that had a teeny bit of a story. But even that interior was a cut-n-paste waste.

Is it too much for Beth to invent things for us to actually have to do in interiors. Mechanisms- sh-t that works- maybe a use of 'physics' to solve stuff like in games from 10+ years ago.

And if the game must lean on FPS so much, is it too much to ask to have some FPS gameplay that wouldn't embarrass a FPS title form 15+ years ago. Baddies that work together. Proper mobs. Good combos of 'tanks' and agile killers. Anything but the 'blat spamming' that forms the backbone of 'combat' in FO4.

FO4 targets the lowest, lamest common denominator 'gamer' to avoid offending the CASUAL core audience of console gamers. But this means Beth defines Fallout now by what the game is NOT. This is a literal dead end for open world game design, and I seriously doubt Beth has ANY good ideas for future open world gameplay going forward.

Yes, yes I do. They were from A World of Pain and not vanilla New Vegas.

@ zanity: I have a suggestion, since apparently, unlike the other hundreds or thousands/millions of people that bought FO4, enjoy it and play it...design, write and produce your own game that meets your expectations. After all, only you know what you want, not game studios and certainly not other players. Doesn't it make sense then to make your own game that would live up to your standards?

I think the lovecraft thing is really annoying and the whole game plus DLCs could have gone differently but this whole "style" of theirs will always be there because they don't fire anyone. The time is past for scaring players that whole scary movie crap died in 2004 seriously drop that shamalan crap alread beth! We can expect the same "style" of game from them no matter what it is even 20 years from now. They won't change their crap story writing and terrible ideas because people keep buying their games. Why is it that only writers in anime know how to make a good story but american game company writers suck so bad? The whole synth thing could have gone the way of ghost in the shell or some other anime involving artificial people yet we get characters like DIMA. Why the hell to they make such shitty choices for plots like siding with that nut job just to keep all the people happy there? I hate the whole synth thing I hate the bad plot and I can't stand building settlements every time I start over. The next game they make I think I will just skip it I don't want to experience the same old s#*! only slightly different again.

@zanity, I think we have gotten your point. You don't like Fallout 4. Fine.

Now please put Fallout 4 away. Go play a different game. One that you do like so you can tell a different audience how great that game is. This particular member of this audience is tired of your tedious rants.
