Settlers stole my armor and ran off?

Sanctuary is my primary base and where I keep everything I have collected in game. I went exploring and collecting some new items and was gone for a fair bit of time. When I left, Sanctuary had 18 settlers and a Happiness of 82 with an up arrow. I was gone for about 3 in game days and returned to find 12 settlers and a Happiness of 32 with a down arrow. I also found that 6 sets of power armor I had on display in my house were gone.

 

I looked all around the house, but nothing I have placed in the house on display or as decoration is displaced and the only things missing are the power armors and 6 settlers. I even used the command TCL in console to search just in case the armor had dropped, but it doesn't appear that happened. Not sure if it is just a coincidence, but 6 settlers and 6 sets of power armor have disappeared from Sanctuary in my game, all at the same time.

 

Did I just suffer the weirdest glitch ever or is it possible the settlers got adventurous and took off with my power armor?

Settlers will sometimes wander off when there is an attack, to chase down the enemies, I'd do a long lap around the outskirts of the settlement to see if they are wandering around the commonwealth somewhere in your PA.

 

Also don't leave FC's in any storage containers in settlements, because even if there is no FC in the actual PA, the settler will take the FC from storage to use in the PA (even though NPC's aren't affected by the power drain mechanic).

In almost 9000hrs of Fallout 4 I've had it happen only once that a settler jumped into my Power Armor. Luckily I was standing nearby and had enough time to open the WorkShop and order the settler to get out of the PA...

 

Have you tried placing and using the bell (Resources/Misc menu) to gather all settlers?

All the power armor was without FCs. Any FCs that I have found I have in my inventory, so I have no idea where any NPC would have obtained a FC. I did ring the bell to gather the settlers and there was only 12 in Sanctuary. I did note one of the settlers had been on guard duty and the guard post was empty and did show it needed someone to be assigned to it. Food production is also down so it seems most of the settlers who left were assigned to that.

 

I did go around the Sanctuary are to see if any settler was stuck somewhere, but nothing. I have the entire Sanctuary settlement area fenced off except the entry at the bridge, so I would think they must have left the area, unless they could get through the fence.

 

It is entirely weird that this would happen and I am thinking it has to be some unusual glitch as a settler taking power armour would be something that is rare and I seem to have lost 6 settlers and 6 power armors all at once. I have looked though a number of web sites and it seems that a settler might take a power armor in a rare circumstance, but 6? Doesn't seem likely so it must be some sort of a glitch.

I did have a funny thing happen a while ago where there was a battle at a checkpoint near Jamaica Plain where the entire 15 settlers came all the way over , helped kill the super mutants then walked all the way back. Could there have been something happening at Red Rocket and they have done the same thing ? It wouldn't explain how they disappeared though.

NPC's will ignore fences if the AI decides they will. (they will use the magical, mystical "NPC Teleporter" that followers are allus' using) They will also get stuck inside larger fences (say if you use foundation blocks as a "fence") Or "stuck" outside the fence if it crosses an NPC waypoint "path".

 

If settlers wander to far from their normal or assigned sandbox area, they can glitch out and just stand around not knowing what to do ... Sometimes a reload will reset them, but sometimes, you''ll have to right them off and just wait and rebuild the settlement population again. The happiness will start to climb back up, once new settlers start to arrive.

 

There is a "random" event that can occur where a few or sometimes several settlers will actually be Institute agents, that will incite a rebellion in the settlement, I've had this happen only once, and I lost 4 settlers total, 1 was the original Synth who started the rebellion, and he did steal the one suit of PA I had there, the other three were simply "synth spies" according to the settlement management software mod. (and no, I couldn't recover the PA frame once I killed him, only the pieces)

My people grab anything not nailed down if they see a rabid poodle. The way I fix their thieving asses is to hide guns in container and LOCK! Also just pull armor pieces out of frame and store. No more theft. :thumbsup:

By the way, enemies will take stuff too.
