Mods being stolen!?

Well, something should be done. We will just keep losing talented modders. AAAANNNNDDDD, I hate thieves of someone else's hard work.

there is just no way of stopping them now, and it is a risk of modding, i would love to see it being different aswell, but 'words' cannot protect a mod.

This was actually related to a bit of moderation that happened yesterday.

It was a misunderstanding between gandalftw and the moderator in regards to a modder's resource that was uploaded. Gandalftw uploaded some JPEGs of various items of clothing he has made in Daz as a "modder's resource" and we disagreed with his interpretation of what a modder's resource is. Namely, a modder's resource should be something a mod author can download, extract and quickly and easily use the assets within their mods, rather than images of things that have been made that would need to be rendered again by the mod author themselves if they actually wanted to use the resource.

He most definitely was not "targeted", but as a result of the moderation, he decided to take his mods down. I am unsure if he plans to re-release his work or not.

Well, that's why for him. But, what about other mod authors that claim theft as the reason for taking down their mods?

I'm not entirely sure what you think we can do, personally, about this, except continue to provide moral support to those mod authors affected by this issue.

We have no power over what people do on other sites and we have no legal ability to challenge people who steal mods from this site and upload them elsewhere.

Well, thank you for your time. :D

I'm seeing more mod authors pulling down their mods saying that they are being "targeted". What is going on and how can it be stopped? :pinch:

If players continue to download content that's been taken without permission the practice will not stop. Sometimes they do it through ignorance because they can't know who the proper author is and sometimes it's done maliciously. They know the content has been taken without full permissions but they want the content more than they care about respecting the original mod author's efforts.

Losing complete control over your work is one of the perks of releasing it.

I removed my mods due to another reason than theft, but, my mod NCR T-51B for NV was stolen a month after I put it up. I found it on a couple other sites and the uploader claimed it as their's. I also found it on a Russian and a Chinese site. Those translations of it were at least honest. They mentioned me and linked to my mod.

But, mod theft is like software/game/movie/music piracy. If it's put out there, and it's something someone wants, they will steal it. I honestly feel that the world govs need to get together and stamp it out. Give out harsh federal prison terms to anyone pirating anything. That will be the only way to end it. First time offense = 25 years in prison. Treat it as a capital offense. I will not apologize if that pisses anyone off. If you're a pirate, you deserve it. I mean look what happens to pirates at sea? They are either killed by the authorities or they are caught and receive the highest sentences. So, deal with it.

That kind of draconian punishment would never work in this world. Because human nature being what it is, firstly you'd have those that would flout their illegal dealings and even publicly announce their behavior, and secondly their would always be at least one country that would hold out and refuse to participate in such measures, thereby hoping to encourage the "pirates" to move their business to their country. Look at how many countries profit from freedom of trade, no extradition treaties, no taxes etc ...

If you're serious, that's genuinely hilarious. It's wrong to claim someone else's work as your own, and in a capitalist economic system there's an obvious and perfectly rational argument for imposing artificial scarcity on post-scarcity digital information since the people who generate that information need to earn their living, but even there when people's livelihoods are at stake the actual evidence that "piracy" is a huge problem requiring draconian legal interventions is, at best, equivocal. Frankly reacting so strongly over free mods is utterly baffling to me, even moreso when we're talking about an author taking their mods down and refusing to share them any more, since that's not even punishing the "pirates" just legit users who might have found some small measure of joy in the work. "Stealing credit" merits some annoyance, to my mind, not taking your ball away in a huff and calling for people to be hung drawn & quartered for downloading a file you were already giving away anyway.
