[WIP] Atvir Dres: The Last Prince of Tear

Hey Janus. I've been following this thread ever since I learned of Atvir. I haven't been able to play with him yet as I'm currently waiting on a gaming rig to come in. But, I love what I've seen so far. Let me give you a bit of a backstory on my character before I ask my question.

My main char is a member of House Redoran. He's almost 280 years old by the time Skyrim comes around and he's been through a LOT. The fall of Dagoth Ur and the Blight, the Oblivion Crisis and the almost utter destruction of House Redoran during and after the Gates opened, the Red Year, the Second Arnesian war, then some wandering, then the Great War, and finally getting caught crossing the border from Pale Pass.

Anyways, I was wondering if Atvir recognizes other Dunmer, (perhaps with a GetPlayerRace function?) and if so, are there any choices for me to pick from? I would really like to say, "Oh, I used to be in House Redoran" or something and he gives a response. Seeing as how he's from House Dres, I can only imagine what that would be.

Also, I know a lot of the lore concerning Morrowind and the Great Houses will be revealed in the Dragonborn DLC. (I saw House Redoran armor and houses!) :woot: But I was wondering if you were thinking of adding any throwbacks to us old Morrowind players.

That's already done, actually. In the December update, Dunmer players will get to pick from the following options:

-No house

-Hlaalu

-Redoran

-Telvanni

-Indoril

-Lost cousin of Dres

-Ashlander

However, as of the next update, the Dres are the only ones who will get some unique dialogue outside of the introductory quest. I'll probably add a few lines of banter referring to the other potential Houses at a later date, but I haven't had time to get to that yet.

Aw, only the Dunmer PC's get those options? Never played a Dark Elf in Mw but I've had several characters make their way through a few of the great houses. Some might even like to talk about the good old days...

I'll take that into consideration for conversations with Atvir down the road, and may give non-Dunmer characters a chance to flaunt their knowledge of Morrowind with him. That said, it's not necessarily easy to write a lore-friendly (and AD is definitely designed to be lore-friendly) storyline that involves a non-Dunmer - especially non-mer - character who is a member of one of the Great Houses. For one thing, most of the Great Houses fell during or shortly after the Red Year, and there aren't many 250 year old humans or beastmen walking around (to the best of my knowledge).

That said, I know that Emma (whose work also tends to be lore-friendly) has made it possible for players of any race to set Vilja to react as if the player is her old friend from Morrowind, due to significant demand. I can't bring myself to roleplay that kind of character, but that doesn't mean that you folks can't. If enough users want their Khajiit or Nords to be several centuries old, I'll certainly do my best to accommodate that.

I don't play human races. Ever.

I did however play Mw with the other two mer races and one dispossessed Dremora (amongst many, many other things) all of whom survived and two who joined a great house. If it's too difficult to create a lengthy bit of lore friendly dialogue for them, perhaps just the chance for all the mer races to raise a glass toward the great house of their choosing once in a while would suffice? If I ever get around to converting my Dremora, I'll just imagine her dialogue choices in my head.

I only ever play Dunmer, so the choice isn't hard for me. But, I think it would be a cool amount of immersion to find out how much Atvir knows of the other Houses... And depending on which House the player is from (if any) then they could have multiple responses to his thoughts on the subject.

For example:

*player chooses House Redoran from the list of available choices*

"Eh, House Redoran? Didn't they live in the shells of bugs or something?

*player has three choices*

1. Oh yes, the shells of Emperor Crabs.

2. Bugs? You mean the Silt Striders?

3. Who would want to live in a bug?!

Well, I hope you see what I mean. xD Oh, do you have any plans for the Dragonborn DLC assets?

I see what you mean, and I'd like to increase the armount House-specific dialogue in the future. In answer to your other question, I'm going to quote myself from another thread (though it pains me to double-post like this :yucky: )...

Will you be making some extra content for Atvir when this is out?

I'm still not quite sure how to react to all this, from a modding perspective. I'll need to play through the DLC first and see if Beth has decided to write the Dunmer lore much differently than I've interpreted it. If they have, I may need to change some of the existing content of the mod.

I'd like to work with some aspects of the DLC, but if I do, it will be through an optional plugin (and won't be released anytime soon). It's all really up in the air, right now; I really wasn't expecting that we'd be going back to Solstheim. This is the first time in the history of TES that Beth has re-created an area we've already visited (Arena notwithstanding).

My intention with AD has always been to make it a fully-contained mod (ie. no masters); I don't want to force players to buy Dragonborn to enjoy Atvir. However, there is a chance I'll release a plugin that makes use of the Dragonborn assets in the future.

Atvir's compatible with pretty much everything, including DLC content (Dawnguard, Hearthfire, and in all likelihood, Dragonborn). Since you can set his home and daily schedule when he's not with you, you can even set him up in one of your spare HF rooms and have him travel to town during the day.

Hello!

I gotta say I honestly had never considered having a Dunmer as a companion until this mod had come out, he's just so full of life, I adore that, so thank you! It really is amazing the detail put into Atvir's story.

I'm curious though; it's obvious his attitude regarding Nords and Argonians will extremely negative/jaded, but I am curious for his ideas about his views on other Mer, according to oblivion standards Dunmer traditionally don't like their elven cousins. However, since he was born and raised in Skyrim, that would mean he probably hasn't been able to interact with them as much as other races right? Will it be reflected in the next update?

I'm sorry if this is a strange question, but it's so great to see a character that's this dynamic, I feel like he is a gateway to the cultural lore within Skyrim!

Atvir doesn't really like anyone who's not a Dunmer, but you're right, most of his ire is reserved for Nords and Argonians. In the first case, it's because of the treatment the Dunmer receive in Windhelm, and in the second, it's because of his family's history and the events of the Red Year.

As for the other elven races, he is a little more flexible in his beliefs. If you talk to him enough, he will mention that he didn't expect the Bosmer to join the Dominion, and that he "would have thought better of them", indicating some small amount of respect for his tree-hugging cousins. Most of his experiences with the Altmer have come through second-hand information, with the exception of Niranye, whom he dislikes for personal reasons (he has a line of dialogue about this... namely, it's about her hypocrisy in criticizing the Dunmer of Windhelm, despite frequenting the Cornerclub).

The next update doesn't introduce any new dialogue regarding the other elven races, I'm afraid, and they play a relatively minor role in the mod as a whole (as it stands). However, as the author, I can safely tell you that he's not overly fond of the Dominion, though he holds out a faint hope that they might somehow restore Morrowind to the Dunmer. However, he knows that this is unlikely... the philisophical gulf between the Dunmer and the Altmer has grown far too wide to ever be truly bridged.

  • 2 weeks later...

A couple of days ago I was complaining about the lack of companion mods like Vilja and Cerwiden, but with a MALE character! Hoth and Valfar are nice, but not quite what I was looking for. Then, when I was posting a request on Mujuro's forum asking if it would be possible to make Elric a standalone companion, I found the name of your companion in one of the many posts there.

Thank you a lot, Janus! I cannot believe I did not hear about this companion before!

Now I am anxiously waiting for your next update!

Regards,
