gandolfski
HelloSorry if this is in the wrong thread, I think this is my first post on the forum. My question is this: Do the mods have to stay in the location they were installed from, and, can they be moved after installed? I don't know if all the files get copied to the games data directories or if it still needs the .zip file to pull data from. I'm trying to clean up my hard drive and have over 100G worth of mods between 4 games and want to copy them to a external hard drive if I can. I am not a hardcore modder and don't know all the ins and outs, if a mod works i use it if it doesn't I delete it. Thanks for the help Ghandolfski
Pickysaurus
gandolfski, I would suggest moving your archives (downloads) by going to 'Settings > Download > Download Folder' in Vortex. When you pick a new location, Vortex will try and move all your files but this could take a while if you have a lot of mods.
gandolfski
So basically just change the mod location in vortex to my external had drive and re-sync everything again. Sorry for the silly questions, I just started using Vortex and still fumbling my way through it lol. I find it rather confusing sometimes!! Thanks for your help Gandolfski
Pickysaurus
You mods should really stay on the same partition as your game. But downloads can be moved by Vortex. There shouldn't be any "resyncing" required if you move the folders in the app.

gandolfski
Thanks for all your help, i'll have to get this sorted out as soon as i get a new hard drive. If I run into problems, I will post again on this thread. Just to clarify something. I don't download mods through Vortex. I get them manually and add them manually. Thanks again ghandolfski
rmm200
Mods you download manually, like mods Vortex downloads, all wind up in the downloads directory you told Vortex to use. That downloads directory can be on any drive. It contains your archives. These you can delete if you don't want the ability to reinstall. The mods directory (unpacked archives) has to be on the same disk partition as your game. That is a hard links requirement.

If you download them with Vortex, then you'll also have the Mod Information for the mods you download. If you download them manually they'll end up in whatever Default Download directory you have your browser set to, (Unless you have it set to "Always Ask") Downloading manually then adding them manually just adds an extra step, because after you add them manually, you're going to have to double click each mod, pick NEXUS as the Source, and get the Meta information for each mod one-by-one, rather than automatically getting the info when you pick "Download with Manager"
