I would also inser that the whole idea of a religious order with OMGWTFBBQAWESOME psychic powers, who's entire reason for being, modus operatdii and daily activity is to sit around and NOT use them, is a crappy bit of writing if ever I saw one. I mean really, what kind of organisation would sit down at a planning meeting and table this "Ok guys, with my mind I can lift vast objects, control entire planet's populations, pull planets out of orbit and deflect bullets, and so can all of you. Lets form an organisation where we all sit around a coffee table and NOT use our awesome abilities, because that would be against some bizaar code of ethics and offend an invisible being none of us has any proof exists or can even fully explain the concept of"

Wheras with the Sith the planning meeting went more like "Dude did you SEE those losers over there? they're sitting around dicussing how NOT to use their powers! Stuff those guys, let's use our powers to rule the friggin' galaxy!"

There are eastern monks that practice pacifism while at the same time learning new and interesting ways of beating the hell out of people, maybe he based them on those?

Doubtful, that was back in the 70's, and Jedi never really used anything but a lightsaber to fight with. The Force more likely had it's roots in New Age Spiritualism with the fighting stuff tacked on to make it more of an action/scifi movie.

To his credit, at the time Starwars 4, and 5 was pretty much doing something with the space and scifi genre that was never really done in American film-making before... Try to make it mature and realistic enough, but still entertaining and easy to follow for the kids. Before that, you either had somewhat dry BBC programming, or Flash-Gordon-esque scifi shows.

The Japanese design theme was passed around to the costumers, prop makers and artists. It's quite evident in the originals and the prequels. There is no one inspiration for the Jedi though. Lucas has stated both Samurai and Shaolin at various times, amongst various other things less eastern.

He did watch and is a fan of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jidaigeki apparently.

I want a Star Wars movie where the Sith assume their rightful role as the good guys.

(tongue firmly in cheek) The Jedi are a bunch of tought-policing religious zealots who claim to be pacifists but during their reign of the galaxy, there was nothing but war, war, war, and then also occasionally war.

When the Sith took over, they fixed everything; they ended the war, killed all the republic's enemies in a single efficient military operation without losing a single man(the jedi "sacrificed" millions of poor clones) replaced the clone troopers with stormtroopers while doubling the fleet, creating jobs, introduced a highly effective new immigration policy that saw the amount of illegal aliens on coruscant drop by 99%, and even redecorated the senate plaza with wonderful new statues of the galaxy's democratically ellected leader. They also pushed technology forward by eons, creating the biggest space ship in history, fitted with a huge prototype laserbeam which accidently destroyed a planet, and invented all sorts of new and very painful "medical procedures"

The jedi ran the galaxy from the shadows, wheras the Sith were democratically elected, by the people, they brought about 20 years of safety and peace, until a group of savage terrorists, striking from a hidden base on a jungle moon, attacked the newly launch Death Star, killing millions of Storm Troopers who only wanted to do their job. Working with a traitor within the empire named Vader, they killed the democratically elected head of state, staged a junta, and as a result of their takeover, the galaxy was once again plunged into war, immigration was out of control(aliens everywhere) and planet destroying laserbeam technology was set back by centuries.

So you see, vote Empire, they're just better.

Yeah he was influenced by intelligent sci-fi like 2001 and Space 1999 (first season) but both suffered from being inaccessible to kids and lets be honest, many adults. 2001 bored most people to death and the first season of Space 1999 had underlying moral and even spiritual themes that were so well hidden that they went over most peoples heads. He came along and without dumbing down he made it accessible to all, the original trilogy minus the Ewoks was how it should be done. Again the clues to what went wrong are in the making of documentaries, the early films saw Lucas heavily involved in everything, it saw him talking and more importantly listening to those around him. The prequels saw him sat on a chair in front of two monitors in a completely green studio, the only time he really bothered with those around him was when passing judgement, he'd then wonder off like some overweight deity.
