Vortex 1.2.16 and The Witcher 3

@HTR

Thank you for all your help in this matter. I think that you're quite right in thinking the issue arises out of some tiny, unnoticed difference between the two computer setups.

In regard to SSD's, I asked the question because I vaguely remember reading an article some months ago about a few problems involving NVMe M.2 SSD's and Windows 10. Since I barely understood what I was reading, I'm unable to state what the problems were. Otherwise, I've never had slow performance issues with Vorfex because of SSD's. In fact, Vortex loads and runs very quickly. I'm always impressed with the speed at which deployments occur.

In regard to comparing background services, etc., on the two computers, I am overwhelmed. It seems as if I would take the best years of my life in carrying out that task!

There's some information that I forgot to mention in my post and responses. When upgrading to Vortex v1.2.16 on computer 2, I received a message that "Move" deployment would no longer work for Witcher 3 because the game and mod staging folder had to be on the same drive. The puzzling thing is that Witcher 3 and its mod staging folder have always been on the same drive. Witcher 3 is (and was) installed on system drive C, and the mod staging folder is (and was) {USERDATA}\{game}\mods.

OK...hmm, how about checking the ownership and rights of the Witcher 3 game folder on both Computers, along with the C:\users\your name\appdata\roaming\Vortex folder

Right click on the folders and pick PROPERTIES---------->SECURITY------->ADVANCED and see who has FULL CONTROL

Also, check your shortcuts and EXEs that have anything to do with the path to Vortex and The Witcher and Steam, GOG etc, to see if ANY of them are set to Run As Administrator

I'm just trying anything at this point to find some kind of difference, especially about Vortex telling you that something that's installed the same exact way on one computer can only use Symlinks

All permissions are the same on both computers (mutatis mutandis).

None of the relevant Vortex and Steam shortcuts and EXEs are being run as Administrator on either computer.

When upgrading from Vortex v1.2.11 to v1.2.16, I receive this message concerning Witcher 3.

In Vortex v1.2.11 my Witcher 3 deployment method is "Move." My mods and mod staging folder are on the same drive as the game and always have been.

Here's an image of my Witcher 3 mod staging folder path.

My core problem presented in this thread is that on one of my gaming computers Vortex v.1.2.16 does not recognize that Witcher 3, its mod staging folder, and its mods are all on the same drive, even though they are. However, on my other gaming computer (yes, I have backups up for everything, even equipment) Vortex v.1.2.16 does in fact recognize that everything is where it should be. Clearly this problem is specific to my computer setup, but I have not yet been able to resolve it. I thank those who have offered help. If and when I find a solution to this puzzling situation, I'll post my findings here.

As of the latest version of Vortex, hardlink deployment only works if Witcher 3 is on your C:\ drive (or the same drive as your "My Documents" folder). This is because Vortex now deploys files to the Documents folder. So this is treated like an extension of the game folder.

Symlink deployment should still be available unless you permissions on your PC are funky and don't allow the creation of Symlinks.

Thank you so much for this information. I now have Witcher 3 up and running on my computer 2 using "Move" deployment and Vortex v1.2.16. As you instructed, I simply moved the "Documents" folder back to drive C:\ from drive D:\ where I had previously moved the "Documents" folder to free up space on drive C:\. Witcher 3 and its mod staging folder are also on drive C:\.

In another forum post last week, you provided the same information to another person with a problem similar to mine. I found the information puzzling but ignored it because (so I thought) I was running Witcher 3 successfully on my computer 1 while using "Move" deployment, even though the "Documents" folder was on drive D:\. However, your post today prompted me to double check computer 1. Lo and behold! its "Documents" folder is on drive C:/. That completely explains why Witcher 3 works on computer 1 using Vortex v1.2.16. (Why I thought the "Documents" folder was on drive D:/ in the first place is a long and boring story.)

Once again, thank you, thank you, thank you, for the help you've provided.
