Blog piece: Ads, Supporters, Endorsements and Bandwidth Throttling

I have never blocked the adds, and normally I have no objection to the adds for games, products, software, etc. Some of it is even of interest to me. But in the last few days, I have seen a bunch of anti-abortion, anti-Obama adds that really annoy me. I don't come to a game site like this to get right-wing rhetoric (or even left-wing rhetoric, for that mater). Do you have any control over the types of adds that are fed to the site?

Very well thought out and totally fair. Particularly given that the lowest speeds a user can get are still 50% greater than they were some months back.

The lynchpin to the new endorsement system is hiding the "not-downvotes." Basically it makes my numbers look like they do now: a ton of people liked it enough to download and redownload it, but much fewer really cared enough to endorse. It does make me look at endorsements less as "loved it" and more as "really liked it" but that sits just fine with me.

The fact that you spent the time to properly explain every aspect of this new system is a reaffirmation that these sites are in good hands.

Consider my lifetime subscription renewed if and when I reincarnate :)

i found that when downloading before the upgrade to 1MB/s i was achieving the full 500K download speed and now i get 250K max although it doesn't affect other downloads meaning i can get the bandwidth of 1MB/S in reality it hardly matters when you download with NMM because you can pause and resume etc ive even abruptly ended the app and it was able to resume the download fine. which make the need for speed less important.

cheers for the great work on the site guys love your work especially with nexus.

also to the person posting about the adds i found the adds to be based off sites that you visit. so even though you might not come on a game site looking for that your web history might be pointing it there. also location plays another role so these particular adds might be tailored to your location

*grimaces* It must be location based then, because I wouldn't touch that kind of web site with a ten foot pole. I try my best to avoid politics on line. Well, that is a depressing statement on the kind of area I live in. You are likely correct though, as I do recall seeing an add for a local car dealership in that same squarish add box.

Does anyone know if there are any payment methods available for becoming a supporter, other then Pay Pal?

If you block the ads, Nexus doesn't get paid, it is not a win win. Did you even read the article, or did you just jump to post your misinformed advice? It's ok if you want to block ads, that's your choice, but you will be throttled because you aren't helping the site by viewing the ads.

I'm sorry to say that if people are blocking ads you post on your site, there's something you're doing wrong, not the people that visit your site. You can't say how this affects your bottom line and expect people to feel morally obligated to modify their behavior. If you feel that ad revenue isn't effective, then you need to find another revenue stream that doesn't chafe with your visitors. Either you're doing something they like and they will come to your site to generate revenue or you do something they don't like and they make what efforts they can to avoid it (e.g. ad block, stop visiting, etc.). You can't force them to accept something they don't like when they have the freedom to do without.

I hate to really say this, But I use Mobile Broadband in the country so turning off my adblocker as of now would cause my 12gb bandwidth limit to reach it's limit faster in the 30 days and the speeds I get are crap. I'd always lag, I'd been meaning to get a premium due to using the nexus exclusively simply because I like it more but two weeks ago i was put out of work when part of my finger got cut off.

I'd hate to see nexus go down, since I hate the way steam works it's mods. Just don't like it's layout if I can I'd be happy to donate what I can, if you really need the ads to be seen then I will disable it but I can't say I'll download many mods until I can get better internet.

Thanks for the great information, and the thoughtful implementation of the new advert and endorsement system. It's quite clear you've taken time to try to implement it in a way that inconveniences responsible and active community members as little as possible, and in fact, rewards many.

I'm a non-pay pal guy to, but I'll happily allow for ads when I view the nexus sites. I've always tried to endorse the mods I love, but sometimes I forget. The new system will be a great way to remind me to thank the mod authors when I'm forgetful.

The modding community at the Nexus has allowed me to stretch a 40 buck game investment into over 500 hours of fun! Let me know when you accept credit card donations. I'll be in for that.

Thanks for your excellent site!
