I've discovered that when I enable a mod the ini.baked files get deleted and this cause's Vortex to throw an access error - full details below.

Vortex version 1.3.13

Fallout 4

Most recent error log attached

Windows 10 Pro 64 bit with 32GB of ram

I'm new to game modding, and therefore Vortex as well, only been using it for a few months or so.

The first mods I installed without any problem, but since installing the last set sometime around installing Simsettlements I've had an error (as per below), and last night I installed LongerPowerLines and had exactly the same error "Network drive unavailable (4350)"

Having Googled last time it happened I ended up copying and renaming the files on each error - pretty much all google results referred to permission errors though, in my case the file is deleted immediately before the error appears. I've also Googled this morning and still can't seem to find anything to do with the files being deleted or missing.

To get a clearer idea of what's going on and to try to document it clearly I've installed another mod this morning (Power Armor Animation Changes by SomberX), and I've had the same series of errors.

1. I check "\\SERVER\Ron's Documents\Documents\My Games\Fallout4" for the presence of baked ini files, Fallout4, Fallout4Custom and Fallout4Prefs all have baked versions present.

2. I download the mod, Vortex picks it up and I install the mod, so far so good, the baked files are still present.

3. I click enable mod and I see the file "Fallout4.ini.baked disappear from the folder and the error appears in vortex that the network drive unavailable. The other two baked files are still there.

4. So I create a copy of Fallout4.ini and rename it to the missing file name, and hit retry (I've not tried cancel or ignore)

5. This now works but prefs.ini.baked has now disappeared and I get an error for that.

6. So I copy and rename the prefs.ini file, then retry, and then the last file custom.baked disappears and I get an error for that, so I do the same for that.

7. After that everything works fine, and the new mod works in the game.

Any idea why this is happening and how to fix it please?

Am I storing up problems by copying and renaming the ini files to .baked?

Don't use Vortex with an external or removable drive.
Also, the error is telling you that an External Application has interfered with file operations, such as Anti-Virus, Disk Management, Utility etc....

Yes, it's BAD to rename files outside of vortex, because Vortex doesn't know about it, and makes it worse for Vortex because then it tries to find the missing file.

Also, unless the mod has been updated, Longer Power Lines used to cause crashes

@HadToRegister thank you very much for the reply, really don't know why I didn't think about Antivirus especially when it's mentioned in the error message

Couldn't see anything in Bitdefenders logs, but uninstalled and appears to have cured it, and it makes sense that it was that as I changed from Avast recently, so that will tie in with when I started having the problem. I just wish these antivirus programs would tell us when they block/delete something rather than doing it silently. No idea what it considered a threat in a simple text file!

At this rate I'm just going to use Windows Security and be done with it, far less hassle.

Thanks for the heads up on Longer Power lines also, haven't had any problems yet, but at least I'll be aware if I do although apparently it only changes the value fWorkshopWireMaxLength.

windows defender is fine - malwarebytes is another good one.

a lot of these anti-virus programs are snake oil. IMHO they're unnecessary, especially in the world today where virus programs aren't all that - its all about identity theft now. ain't no anti-virus going to help you with that.

Does Windows Defender protect from Malicious Website and scripts too?

I'm not sure, but its done well in recent reviews, and another forum I'm on has quite a few members who are pretty clued up about security and they say that's all they use with added hardening of Windows.

i use the paid for version of malwarebytes - have done for years. i cannot recall the last time i used an anti-virus program - must be 10 years or so now. malwarebytes is something i'd happily recommend in conjunction with windows defender.
