For me?

The best game ever was Privateer, the add-on Righteous Fire made it even better. It is unrivaled up to today in terms of atmosphere.

Had a few favorites though:

-Day of the Tentacle

-Monkey Island 1 + 2

-Loom

-U.F.O. - Enemy Unknown

-Strike Commander

-A.T.A.C. - The war on drugs

-Colonization

-Sim City

-Quake

-Unreal Tournament (is this a Retro game?)

Ahh the Privateer series ... I lost weeks of my life there. I liked it so much that when I saw that Origin had a new game called Strike Commander I just had to try it. SC never did suck me in like Privateer, but I did get a nickname out of it (first game I'd played that I needed to come up with a character name ... I have so little imagination).

Another efficient time sink was Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri.

Final Fantasy 7, is now my current favourite retro game.

Just purchased a download from Square Enix for the pc, and reloving the game again. Awkward keyboard controls but I'll live with that.

- Silent Hill (original psx version). This was the first survival horror game that actually lived up to the category for me, so many horror games are good at making you jump but this game had the power of instilling a real sense of dread and oppression with brilliant atmosphere, sound, environment, creatures which worked so well together.

A true work of art.

I remember Silent Hill - good game. I played it a few times. The movie was good too. Very creepy. A good movie for Halloween late night. Don't have nightmare's afterwards though. It is as bad as the remake of The House on Haunted Hill. Very gory.

My favorite retro games from very retro to later less retro games:

Pac Man

Ms. Pac Man

Centipede

Milipede

Tempest (all time favorite)

Star Wars (original Parker Brothers game) - also all time favorite

Double Dragon both I and II for the NES

Warcraft 2 - another big favorite

Heroes of Might and Magic 2, 3 (Armegedon's Blade), and 5 (Tribes of the East)

Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, Battle for Middle Earth I and II (offline versions)

Real Myst, Riven, Exile, Revelation, and Myst V (all favorites)

Fable the Lost Chapters

Caesar III and IV

and even though its not retro - The Elder Scrolls Skyrim.
